We are promised more blood, more fear, and more answers about the nature of the scariest clown.

In the fall of 2025, HBO released It: Welcome to Derry, a horror prequel to Stephen King's iconic novel It, which expands upon the story depicted in the movies.

In January 2026, HBO representatives confirmed that a second season was in development, though it had not yet been officially renewed.

Unlike the first season, which was based on King's books, the follow-up will require an original story, so the creators do not want to rush the script. Here's everything known so far about the second season of It: Welcome to Derry.

When Will 'It: Welcome to Derry' Season 2 Be Released?

The exact release date for Season 2 of It: Welcome to Derry has not yet been announced. The first season aired from October 26 to December 14, 2025.

HBO executive Casey Bloys explained that the creators do not want to rush the script because the new episodes are not based directly on Stephen King's novel and require an original story.

Assuming the second season begins filming in 2026, it could premiere in late 2027 or early 2028.

Although key plot details are being kept under wraps, the creators promise that the next chapter will be much grittier and darker. While the first season was set in the early 1960s, the new story will take place during the Great Depression.

According to director Andrés Muschietti, the second season will take place in 1935, 27 years before the events of the first season. The main characters will be adults barely scraping by.

The plot is expected to center on the bloody story of the Bradley Gang's demise in Derry – an episode mentioned only in passing in King's novel. Fans are also discussing the theory that the series will reveal Pennywise's nonlinear perception of time.

The first season finale hinted that the creature is aware of future events and attempts to influence the ancestors of those destined to defeat it. Consequently, the second season will likely feature relatives of future Losers' Club members.

Additionally, fans of King's books hope the upcoming chapter will introduce more "cosmic" elements of the mythology, such as Maturin, an ancient turtle who served as Pennywise's adversary in the novels.

Will Season 2 Be the Final One?

The creators of It: Welcome to Derry envision it as a multi-season anthology chronicling Pennywise's past awakenings – Andrés Muschietti has mentioned plans for at least three seasons.

If the follow-up receives an official green light, the third season could span an even wider timeframe and transport viewers to 1908. According to Stephen King, that was the year when another horrific tragedy struck the town of Derry: the Kitchener Ironworks disaster.
