This season will be a portrait of a woman whose fate is one of the most mysterious chapters in criminal history.

In fall 2025, Netflix premiered the third season of its acclaimed anthology series Monster, focusing on the dark exploits of Ed Gein, who operated in the 1950s.

Even before the premiere, the show's creators announced the renewal of a fourth season. The new chapter will focus on Lizzie Borden, whose name has been associated with the mysterious double murder that shook America in the late 19th century.

When Will 'Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story' Be Released?

The fourth season will transport viewers to Fall River, Massachusetts, a small town where a bloody drama unfolded in August 1892. The victims were Andrew Borden, an elderly and fairly wealthy furniture factory owner, and his second wife, Abby.

They were hacked to death with an axe in attacks that occurred approximately one hour apart. First, the stepmother was attacked in a second-floor bedroom, then, when the father returned from a walk and lay down to rest, the attacker fatally stabbed him as well.

The prime suspect became Andrew's youngest daughter, Lizzie, almost immediately.

What Real Story Is the Upcoming Season Based On?

Lizzie Borden was born into a wealthy but frugal family and was accustomed to an ascetic lifestyle โ€“ their mansion didn't even have running water, even though the family could afford it. After her mother's death when Lizzie was two, her father married Abby, whom Lizzie disliked and believed had married solely for selfish reasons.

Family conflicts grew increasingly intense: Andrew scolded his daughter for not finding a husband and for being a financial burden, while his new in-laws received expensive gifts and real estate.

Lizzie was active in the church and taught Sunday school. However, this didn't prevent her from having a fiery temper and openly expressing hostility toward her stepmother.

During the investigation, Lizzie behaved inconsistently, gave confusing statements, and the police made serious errors: they didn't check the suspect's clothing for blood and didn't thoroughly search her room.

Nevertheless, Lizzie was indicted in December 1892, however, a jury trial the following year resulted in an acquittal. Public opinion remained on the side of the prosecution, and Lizzie became an outcast.
