In recent years, Robert Eggers has become one of the leading horror filmmakers. Each of his works, including The Witch, The Lighthouse, and Nosferatu, is distinguished by a unique visual style, historical accuracy, and an oppressive atmosphere.

Last year, news broke that Eggers was working on a new project: the horror film Werwulf, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Judging by the initial details, Eggers is preparing something darker than anything he has ever directed.

Werwulf will be released worldwide on December 25, 2026.

Apparently, Eggers has decided to start a tradition – his previous movie, Nosferatu, was also released on Christmas Day.

What Will 'Werwulf' Be About?

Not much is known about the plot yet. Set in 13th-century England, the movie will be closely tied to the folklore traditions of that era.

Some speculate that Werwulf may be based on the legend of Peter Stumpp, also known as the Werewolf of Bedburg. According to the legend, Stumpp made a deal with the devil and received a magical belt that allowed him to transform into a wolf.

However, Eggers may also draw on other legends, such as those about witches who inflict lycanthropy.

As always, fantasy motifs will be closely intertwined with historical accuracy. The dialogue in Werwulf is written in Middle English, a language that fell out of use shortly after the 15th century.

During that time, the word "werwulf" was often used as a synonym for the devil. Eggers co-wrote the screenplay with Icelandic poet and writer Sjón – the two previously collaborated on the historical epic The Northman.

Who Is in the Cast of 'Werwulf'?

Werwulf will star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is known for his roles in Kick-Ass, Anna Karenina, and the recent Nosferatu. His voluminous hair, which he grew out for the role, indicates that he was cast as the werewolf.

Four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson, who is familiar to viewers from The Witch, will also star in the movie. Both actors have worked with the director before and are clearly at home in his dark world.

Fans are particularly excited about Lily-Rose Depp's casting. After her role in Nosferatu, the actress redefined herself, and in Werwulf, she will once again take on an unusual role.

In stills from filming, Depp appears with a cleft lip, a congenital condition often associated with mythical creatures, including vampires and werewolves, in the Middle Ages.

It's possible that Lily-Rose's character may be a werewolf or closely related to one.
