The creators initially planned only one season, but the show's immense popularity changed their plans.

In the spring of 2024, the historical drama Shogun captivated audiences worldwide. The show, which is set in early 17th-century Japan and centers on a power struggle, was dubbed a Game of Thrones in a Japanese setting and received rave reviews.

Initially, the creators had no plans for another chapter because the first season covered the entire plot of James Clavell's original novel.

However, its enormous success forced FX to reconsider. In May 2024, Shogun was renewed for two more seasons, with the third serving as the finale – the creators have no plans for prequels or spin-offs.

Here's everything we know about the second season of one of the most acclaimed historical dramas in recent years.

When Will 'Shogun' Season 2 Be Released?

Initial reports stated that filming for the second season of Shogun would begin in January 2026, with the season potentially airing before the end of the year. However, the start of production was delayed by several months.

The second season of Shogun is now expected to air in 2027, though the exact premiere date has not yet been announced. Like the previous season, the new season will consist of ten hour-long episodes.

FX called Shogun an international hit and confirmed that work on the second and third seasons is well underway.

There is no official information yet about the plot of the second season. Since the first season covered the events of James Clavell's novel in its entirety, the new chapter will tell the story of what happened to the main characters after the finale.

According to showrunner Rachel Kondo, the second season will pick up ten years after the events of the first one. The plot will be based on real historical events, and Kondo has described the new chapter as much darker.

Another showrunner, Justin Marks, promised that the upcoming chapter will shock viewers from the very first episode.

The key actors will likely return to their roles. These include Hiroyuki Sanada as Yoshii Toranaga, Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne, and Anna Sawai as Lady Mariko.

The first season of Shogun depicted 17th-century Japan, which was torn apart by civil war. A Dutch ship carrying firearms arrives in the country and among the crew is the English navigator John Blackthorne.

Initially, Blackthorne is terrified by Eastern customs, but he eventually adapts and gains an influential patron: the warlord Yoshii Toranaga. Blackthorne shares the secret plans of Portuguese traders with Toranaga, information that proves useful in his political struggle.

By the season finale, Toranaga has managed to prevent European penetration into Japan, bring peace to the country, and become shogun – the influential military ruler who controls the entire country.

The ship that brought Blackthorne to Japan was burned, meaning he would be unable to return to his homeland and would remain in Japan forever.
