The actor violated the 45-second rule, going on to reflecting on things for more than 5 minutes straight and later becoming a new meme in social media.
However, that wasn’t the only highlight of the moment as fans looked closely at how the award’s presenter and last year’s Oscar winner Cillian Murphy reacted to overstaying onstage. Naturally, it might have become an even bigger pop cultural thing than Brody’s lengthy speech.
Cillian Murphy Was Having Hard Times at Last Week’s Oscar Ceremony
The actor, who received his Best Actor award for the role in Christopher Nolan ’s Oppenheimer last year, came up on stage on March 2 to present the statuette to this year’s winner, though he clearly didn’t expect to stay in the spotlight for that long.

As Murphy had to remain onstage until the winner’s acceptance speech was over, he thus might have had to go through one of the most challenging missions of his career, waiting for Adrien Brody to end his speech that lasted 5 minutes and 40 seconds.
As Deadline later on revealed, Brody’s discourse broke the ceremony’s record held by Greer Garson’s acceptance speech back in 1943. Murphy, in his turn, was obviously uncomfortable considering his well-known dislike for public events, but at least the actor’s meme collection got another big trophy that night.
