The prequel’s most ruthless thugs clearly didn’t understand the assignment.

House of the Dragon ’s season 2 just kicked it off last night with its first episode, but was quick to get all the heat from its fans.

Following young Lucerys’s tragic death in the first season’s episode, the second installment finds all of its remaining characters mourning the boy in their own way each, with Alicent praying for his soul in her home chapel and Rhaenyra plotting the most relentless revenge ever.

Now that the series has finally introduced two highly anticipated characters whose major role was teased weeks before the premiere, fans seem to be nothing but shocked by the way the second season handled their appearance.

With no major spoilers ahead for those that never got to read George R.R. Martin’s book, House of the Dragon’s season 2 episode 1 brings a revengeful duo to the screen making an entrance for Blood and Cheese, two assassins hired by Daemon Targaryen to kill one of the Greens’ key members and bring their head to Rhaenyra as a proof of the fact that her vengeance got carried out by professionals in a right way.

Having received a clear instruction accompanied by the victim’s appearance description, Blood and Cheese sneak into the castle meeting no real resistance, and end up killing another family member that actually couldn’t be confused with the real victim in any way possible.

The episode’s premiere didn’t take long for fans to take to social media creating a new Reddit thread to pour their feelings out. Many found a lot of support by saying that they were genuinely disappointed by the second season’s first episode, the ending of which didn’t make sense at all and, on top of that, completely ruined the eerie image that the original book had built about Blood and Cheese.

Those who made it clear that they were familiar with Martin’s novel claimed that the episode was “such a let down” and all the changes that the showrunners had inserted just seemed to be out of place. According to the Redditor nicknamed Prime_Smiler, the season was supposed to start with something that “had the potential to be Red Wedding level memorable but was executed poorly. There was no intensity or emotional aspect at all.”

Still, other users didn’t find the episode that unsatisfying as some comments praised a whole new level of the season’s graphics that made everything look even more realistic than ever.

Many also noted that Helaena’s actress Phia Saban and her powerful performance in the episode’s most excruciating scene deserved more recognition and attention than Blood and Cheese’s misinterpretation.

House of the Dragon’s season 2 episode 1 is already available for streaming while the second episode will arrive on Max on June 23.
