Fans Claim This 51% RT Action Is THE Robin Hood Adaptation Done Right

Watch Alan Rickman being villainous before Severus Snape even existed. This Robin Hood adaptation is endlessly rewatchable and equally as entertaining.
I know, I know, we've seen a bunch of Robin Hood adaptations already. We had it all, really. And we love each and every one of them in their own way (not talking to you, Russell Crowe, though). Some leaned into darkness, others have gotten into a more comedic territory. You just can't help but appreciate the versatility of the legend.
But what if I told you that there's one version that hits the sweet spot?
Yep, that's right! Moreover, you might have overlooked it due to its modest 51% Tomatometer score. As Redditor Belnak shared:
“I saw this >10 times in the theatre when it came out. I thought everyone would think this, and was surprised when I just checked Rotten Tomatoes and saw how low it was ranked.”
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991): 90s Take On a Beloved Adventure
Now listen up, because Prince of Thieves has something truly special going on. Kevin Costner 's portrayal of Robin Hood might not be the most accurate (that British accent is, let's just say, unique) but that's exactly what makes it so charming.
The movie follows our hero as he returns to England only to find out his homeland is under the tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman). Rather than accept injustice, Robin takes to Sherwood Forest, gathering a band of outlaws to fight back against evil.
The friendship between Robin and Morgan Freeman's Azeem feels authentic and adds a fresh dimension to our dear legend. Their chemistry is great and Freeman brings wisdom to his character.
Prince of Thieves Is One of the Best Robin Hood Adaptations & You Should Give It a Chance
Prince of Thieves does a lot of things right. Unlike modern adaptations that often get lost in trying to be edgy or too “realistic,” this version understands what makes Robin Hood's story good. It's hope and standing up for what you believe in. The movie knows exactly when to be serious and when to have fun.
As one Redditor wrote:
“This movie is 1000% better than every other Robin Hood movie out there. Especially the Russell Crowe one, that one is the worst! Prince of Thieves by far has one of the best soundtracks of any film EVER, Michael Kamen knew what he was doing! The writing was on point, and the satirical elements were superb.”
And while we agree with everything said above, we can't help but think that the real secret weapon of Prince of Thieves is Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Before he became Severus Snape, Rickman delivered a performance so deliciously villainous we can't take our eyes off of it.
So if there's one reason to watch this movie (though there are many) do it for Rickman's performance. It won't disappoint.
