I Think 'Shrek' Delay Is Good News For Everyone & Here's Why

It feels like Shrek’s creators have finally understood the assignment, but I also can’t be happier for another animated comeback slated for almost the same release date.

Shrek movies have always been fun to watch over and over again, but we never know what hides behind a long-gone franchise’s revival, and that’s the worst part.

When the fifth instalment for the Shrek franchise was announced last year, I was one of many fans who doubted the idea — just because it looked like Shrek’s creators spent twenty years trying to figure out whether the series was worth milking even more.

Now the fifth movie is definitely coming and there’s clearly much less excitement in the air as I thought would be after the controversial teaser’s drop.

However, Shrek 5’s constant delays aren’t actually a bad thing — at least they have just saved another animated franchise.

‘Shrek 5’ Is No Longer In the Way for ‘Ice Age 6’, and It’s Good for Everyone

As Deadline recently reported, Shrek 5 has now officially moved to June 2027 instead of December 2026, and I think there’s an obvious silver lining in yet another delay.

Somehow, the upcoming movie ended up sharing the same release month with 20th Century Studios’ Ice Age 6, another instalment in the hit Ice Age franchise that comes a decade after 2016’s Ice Age: Collision Course.

Though Shrek 5 and Ice Age 6 were initially scheduled for a release on December 18 and 23 respectively, the gap of just five days wouldn’t do much for a harsh competition between the movies that are set to revive two of the biggest animated franchises in history.

Still, I wouldn’t rely much on what we’re having right now since Ice Age 6 is likely to move somewhere else now that Avengers: Doomsday is also scheduled to arrive in theatres on December 18, 2026.

‘Shrek’ Fans Will Have to Wait More, but At Least We Might Get Something Better After All

Since the 2023 strikes thwarted the entire industry’s plans for the upcoming several years, delays aren’t really a rare thing, but it’s still different with Shrek 5.

The movie was initially said to be released sometime this year, though several months ago it was pushed all the way to December 2026 and now will be arriving in theatres in June of 2027 if we’re lucky.

However, most fans would rather wait and see something worthy rather than get what we saw in that first teaser.

“Makes sense but Im also Thinking they are adjusting the film in some way since the reaction to the teaser wasn’t very positive”, Redditor Pin_Time commented on the matter in a thread.

”This only supports the rumor of Shrek 5's troubled production. At least this shows Universal is REALLY trying to not screw up Shrek and is willing to keep delaying it to try and get it right”, FunnyQuirkyUsername agreed.

For now, Shrek 5 is slated for a release on June 30, 2027.
