The director’s upcoming movie has received a controversial update at the recent ComicCon.

There’s more than a year left until Christopher Nolan ’s epic adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey will arrive in theatres worldwide. However, the movie has already found devoted fans, despite still being in the very active production mode somewhere in Greece and Italy.

Announced several months ago, the upcoming film has been in the filming process for just a few weeks, already featuring many big names like Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Zendaya among others.

There’s still no saying about how the leading roles were distributed and whether Nolan’s next movie will become a faithful adaptation of the legendary Greek poem, though Universal’s execs have recently reassured everyone of its potential cult status.

The update, however, quickly garnered controversial reactions.

Despite the star-packed movie not wrapping its production up until, presumably, the last months of this year, Odyssey has already received its official first portion of hype from Universal’s head.

At CinemaCon, the studio’s distribution chief Jim Orr praised Nolan’s next work, saying it will become “a visionary, once-in-a-generation cinematic masterpiece that Homer himself would quite likely be proud of”.

This might have been a confirmation of the director sticking to the original poem’s plot and not driving it into another direction after all. However, many of those in attendance on Wednesday likely didn’t take Orr’s words that seriously, as Variety also reported that the audience “laughed at the hyperbole.”

Additionally, Orr also spared some words about Odyssey’s all-star cast, hinting that this might be another guarantee of the upcoming movie’s overwhelming success at least in the box office.

Fans Aren’t Impressed by Orr’s Praise for Odyssey Either

While the exec’s revelations about Nolan’s next movie were likely supposed to become a tiny sneak peek into how ambitious it actually is, Odyssey’s potential viewers didn’t take Orr’s words that seriously either.

“‘Executive likes own movie’ is not an article,” Redditor NobodyLikedThat1 noted sarcastically.

At the same time, Redditor Top_Buy2467 wondered how come Orr had already had a chance to evaluate the film if it had just been pushed into production. The same question was then asked by other users, with some suggesting Orr might be a time traveler.

“PR is moving fast. Usually they wait until a movie is finished before making declarations”, Redditor HereOnCompanyTime also added.

Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey is currently scheduled to be released in theatres on July 17, 2026.
