Fans say Led Zeppelin sold Stairway to Heaven for Netflix money — Netflix already tried that once

The refusal list runs fifty years deep, from Cameron Crowe to The Simpsons. The receipt that breaks the money theory is only ten months old.

On October 13, Netflix released the first trailer for Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, and Aslan creates a world to a remixed "Stairway to Heaven." That's a song Led Zeppelin has guarded for half a century, so r/movies produced its explanation within hours:

"Led Zeppelin wants that Netflix money."

Even the thread's more charitable voices, the ones conceding the band's lifelong fantasy streak, circled back to the same verdict — as one put it, "But yeah, it was the money." It's a tidy theory with one documented problem. Netflix already came to Led Zeppelin with its checkbook open, for the biggest show it has ever made, and left empty-handed.

The refusal the money theory skips

Stranger Things music supervisor Nora Felder wanted "Stairway to Heaven" for the series finale — the most-watched send-off in Netflix history, the show that turned Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" into a No. 1 hit 37 years after release. She told Vulture how that went:

"I tried Led Zeppelin, but it didn't work."

The finale used Prince's "Purple Rain" instead, and it aired on New Year's Eve 2025. Ten months separate that refusal from this trailer, and both requests came with Netflix money attached. Whatever changed between December and October, it wasn't the payer.

Netflix's flagship show asked for Stairway to Heaven in 2025 and settled for Prince. Netflix's Narnia got the song in 2026.

Fifty years of no

For context on how rare this is, the ledger of rejections:

  • Almost Famous (2000): Cameron Crowe shot a scene of William playing the song for his mother. Zeppelin cleared five other tracks and refused this one, so the scene was cut.
  • Wayne's World (1992): The theatrical cut had the first four notes. Home video replaced even those with generic guitar.
  • The Simpsons: denied.
  • Stranger Things: denied, as above.
  • The sanctioned uses: essentially their own 1976 concert film, The Song Remains the Same.

What Gerwig had that none of them did, per Stereogum, was a finished film to screen. She says Robert Plant and Jimmy Page approved after watching it, and that both men "love C.S. Lewis" — which lands differently coming from the band that wrote Gollum and Mordor into "Ramble On." A Lewis adaptation by a Barbie-sized director is about the narrowest keyhole through which this song was ever going to pass, and a cue sheet fee alone had failed to open it for decades.

The practical details, for the calendar: the film opens in IMAX and regular theaters worldwide on February 12, 2027, with IMAX sneaks from February 10, then streams on Netflix from April 2. Daniel Craig plays the magician uncle, Meryl Streep voices Aslan, and nobody has confirmed whether "Stairway" appears in the film itself or lives only in this trailer. If it's trailer-only, Led Zeppelin's actual movie debut is still pending — and the band found a way to make even its surrender look like a limited engagement.
