Julia Roberts’ beloved romcom is about to become another victim of Hollywood’s worst trend, but fans wouldn’t mind it — if it wasn’t for one detail.

Cult classic romantic comedies are always there to comfort its fans when modern movies fail to do so — ironically, this is also the effect they have on the industry’s filmmakers.

Since nobody yet dared remake or rather make a continuation for Julia Roberts’ hit romcom Pretty Woman, the actress’ other big movie of the genre, My Best Friend’s Wedding, has just received a sequel, with Past Lives and Materialists’ Celine Song being attached to the upcoming project, according to Variety.

Even though the old classics’ return to the screens thanks to remakes or sequels is usually never a good idea, the original film’s fans think it’s not where the main problem lies — or rather numerous problems.

‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Sequel Doesn’t Really Make Sense 28 Years Later

It’s fair to say Hollywood has been lacking original ideas in the past several years, so another news about everyone’s favorite movie from decades ago getting a remake has also become a new norm.

In the case of My Best Friend’s Wedding, however, the talks are about a continuation of the same story and not a remake of it, which was what concerned many fans in the first place.

“No way. Whyyyyyyy. I loved this movie and don't see a reason for a sequel. You could do a remake, but a sequel?!” Redditor scattered_ideas complained in a news-related thread.

“Just write a new romcom!! She literally just showed that it can be successful. Why do a legacy sequel noone is clamoring for?? Feels like a waste of her talents”, Belch_Huggins chimed in.

Others also questioned Julia Roberts’ potential involvement and whether the future sequel would even be worth a shot if the actress decided to stay out of it.

“I feel that unless Julia is on board, even disregarding the question of whether this is a good idea or not, this whole thing is moot. It definitely cannot work without her”, MonzaMurcatto commented.

‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Was a Hit That a Sequel Is Very Unlikely to Beat

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, My Best Friend’s Wedding holds scores of 74% and 73% from critics and audiences

  • On IMDb, the movie is rated 6.4/10

On par with Roberts’ Pretty Woman, My Best Friend’s Wedding is regarded as the classic of the genre, even though not everyone is getting their happy ending there.

Also starring Dermot Mulroney, the movie follows food critic Julianne Potter as she finds out that her childhood friend Michael O'Neal is getting married.

The problem is that the two had a deal to marry each other if they didn’t find someone else by the time they’re both 28, so Julianne was fully convinced her fate was forever sealed with Michael’s.

My Best Friend’s Wedding made almost $300 million in the box office against the budget of $38 million and received numerous awards and nominations, including a nod from the Academy for Best Original Score.
