Something in these first shots feels intriguingly unexpected.

Following big-screen adaptations of Little Women and Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s move into the world of The Chronicles of Narnia was always going to spark curiosity. Now that filming on The Magician’s Nephew has officially begun in London, we finally have our first peek at her vision. And yes, one detail instantly stood out to me.

Over the weekend, cameras rolled around Bank Station and The Royal Exchange. Streets were transformed into post-war London, complete with 1950s shopfronts, boxing posters, and a mysterious 'Northfield Club' sign.

The look is gorgeous — but it’s also a major shift. C.S. Lewis’s 1955 novel places the action in the late 19th century, so moving the timeline forward by decades changes the story’s atmosphere entirely.

Gerwig was spotted on set with two young actors, likely playing Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer — the children who, through a chain of magical missteps, unleash the White Witch (Emma Mackey) on London.

Production will move between London, the South East, and Shepperton Studios before wrapping in early 2026. The plan is for a late-2026 release — first in cinemas, then on Netflix.

If these early images are anything to go by, Gerwig’s Narnia will be less of a strict page-to-screen translation and more of a bold reinterpretation. Whether that works for the story or not… well, we’ll have to wait and see.
