Madness is coming.

A Valentine's Day card from Joker director Todd Phillips could not be more perfect for fans, as he shared a first look at Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, who will join Joaquin Phoenix 's Joker in the upcoming sequel.

The first look, which is already loaded with some madness-for-two vibes, has already sparked a number of fan theories, one of which sounds completely plausible. According to Twitter user buggy_con, the upcoming Joker sequel, titled Folie à Deux, could be a Harley Quinn origin story.

"I think Joker 2 will take place entirely from the perspective of Harley. Like we see from her eyes how she gets turned into Harley. How Joker manipulates her and swoons her over into his way of thinking [till] the end and the two of them are causing some mayhem," the theory author said.

Given that the first film was devoted entirely to establishing Arthur Fleck as the Joker, the upcoming musical sequel might as well turn its attention to the Clown Prince's flamboyant girlfriend.

It's likely that Phillips will rely heavily on illusion and fantasy to justify the movie's status as a musical, and many fans already suspect that the sequel will leave everyone scratching their heads over which parts of it were true.

Whether or not the fan theory ends up being true, fans are already nominating Lady Gaga for another Oscar based solely on her look in the first still from the movie. Gaga fans have always believed that their icon has a "female Joker" kind of personality, and now that something like that is about to arrive, they are sure that she will be able to land another Oscar nomination.

Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled for release on October 4, 2024. In addition to Phoenix and Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey have all been cast in yet-to-be-announced roles.
