This would be a perfect choice for those who prefer their historical drama with a more provocative twist. The new reading of the classic that definitely deserves your time.

It's safe to say that the period drama fandom is huge, and the range of shows in the genre is pretty wide — from historically accurate shows to completely unrealistic fantasy dramas (hey, Bridgerton! ).

But it doesn't matter what the core premise of such shows is, because the hardcore fans of the genre will eat them all up in one binge and crave for more.

With this particular Italian drama, it's a different story.

The Leopard is one of Netflix's newest projects, released in early March. The six-episode series is actually an adaptation of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's acclaimed 1958 novel, but it offers a fresh perspective on the classic tale set in the beautiful landscapes of Sicily.

The series follows Don Fabrizio Corbera, Prince of Salina, portrayed by Kim Rossi Stuart. As Italy approaches unification, Don Fabrizio faces the decline of his aristocratic dynasty amid the rise of the bourgeoisie.

Also in the spotlight is his nephew, Tancredi Falconeri, whose revolutionary zeal is at odds with the family's traditional values. As is Angelica Sedara, played by the stunning Deva Cassel, an absolutely astonishing young woman who becomes entangled with Tancredi, challenging familial bonds and societal norms.

There are many passionate storylines that are impossible to imagine being part of any other narrative rather than Italian. For example, there’s a story of Don Fabrizio's young daughter, Concetta, whose unrequited love for her cousin adds so much controversy to the story.

How Historically Accurate Is The Leopard?

The new series shows profound attention to historical detail capturing the essence of Sicilian aristocracy. Fans of the classic story thought it would be hard to follow in the footsteps of the 1963 Italian film based on the novel, but it seems the series has done a great job.
