Forget the Box: This 3-Ingredient Italian Mac and Cheese Sauce Is Truly Flawless
You might have never thought macaroni and cheese was this easy to make at home.
At times we all want some diversity in our dinner routine, so product brands made sure we can get the dish we crave for in just several minutes. This is the case for the famous macaroni and cheese that has become a pure sensation in the world and especially in the US, leading to those Mac and cheese boxes becoming extremely popular too.
However, macaroni and cheese is that kind of food that doesn’t require many ingredients and much time for preparation, so save the recipe for that evening when you’ll want to try something new.
Here’s what you need: 450 g of pasta, 300 ml of milk, 150 g of semi-hard cheese, 50 g of butter, 1 heaping tablespoon of flour, a pinch of nutmeg, salt to taste.
Put a pot of salted water on the stove, bring it to a boil, and cook the pasta until al dente.
Meanwhile, melt the butter in a deep saucepan. Add the flour, stir vigorously with a whisk, and cook for 10–12 seconds (no longer, so the mixture doesn’t burn). Pour in the milk, stirring immediately to prevent lumps from forming.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly (about three minutes). It should remain slightly runny. Season with salt and a pinch of nutmeg.
Add the roughly grated cheese, stir, and keep on the heat until completely melted. The sauce should have a rich, creamy flavor and aroma. Drain the pasta in a colander (do not rinse), wait for 10-15 seconds, and add it to the prepared sauce. Toss gently so that the sauce covers each piece of pasta evenly; this makes the dish juicy and very tender.
Before serving, you can sprinkle some grated cheese on top.
