Four days from the Lioness finale, Paramount+ still hasn't ordered a season 4 of its biggest show
Lioness closes season 3 this Sunday as the most-watched title on Paramount+ anywhere in the world. Its lead spent last week’s episode escaping captivity, and the streamer still hasn’t said whether any of it continues past the finale.
Lioness season 3 ends with episode 8, and Paramount+ drops it on Sunday, September 20 at 12am PT / 3am ET. That is the streamer's standard midnight-Pacific slot, not an early release, whatever the aggregators are calling it this week. In the US the show also streams on Fubo; internationally it sits on Prime Video.
The reason half the internet is checking the clock is episode 7. Joe finally got out — rescued after a season spent as someone's hostage — and then refused to go home. Who ordered the kidnapping, and what her own side already knows about it, is what the finale has to answer.
What it does not have to answer, and probably won't, is whether there is a season 4. Four days out from the finale, Paramount+ has not renewed the show.
The numbers the streamer is sitting on
This is not a bubble show clinging on. Per FlixPatrol, Lioness is currently the most-watched title on Paramount+ worldwide, trending there in 28 countries and sitting at #1 in the United States, above Yellowstone and MobLand. It has also climbed to 10th on Prime Video globally, trending in seven countries and topping the chart outright in Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines and Singapore.
The cast has been treating a renewal as a formality. Jill Wagner — who plays Bobby and is credited as a writer on the series — put it plainly to ScreenRant before the season started.
"We're going to get season 4."
That is a writer on the show saying it, which is worth more than a press line. It is still not an order.
The part nobody puts in the release-date posts
Taylor Sheridan writes every episode of Lioness himself. He is also on his way out of the company that makes it. The dates are public and they are tight:
- March 2026 — the film side of Sheridan's Paramount contract expires.
- End of 2028 — his Paramount television deal runs out.
- January 1, 2029 — a five-year film, TV and streaming deal with NBCUniversal begins.
- In between — the Yellowstone universe, MobLand and Lioness all sit at Paramount, and every one of them needs his time.
A fourth season ordered now would land inside that window with a creator whose attention is already being bid for. That is not a reason to cancel a hit, but it is a reason a renewal that looks automatic from outside can sit unsigned for weeks.
The show is #1 on the service in its home market and the service still hasn't said the word. That gap is the story, not the finale time.
What Sunday actually has to deliver
Episode 8 is titled "The Unraveling", and the promo Paramount+ put out leans on exactly the thread episode 7 left hanging: Joe hunting the people who took her, while the agency around her decides how much of the truth it can afford. If the season ends on the answer, it closes. If it ends on Joe finding out her own side buried it, that is a season 4 cliffhanger whether or not one has been ordered.
