From Buffy to Yoda: How a Name Change Shaped a Sci-Fi Icon

Yoda's original name was 'Buffy' in early Star Wars drafts.
Despite the wealth of information available about the making of Star Wars, there are some intriguing behind-the-scenes facts that remain lesser known. One such tidbit concerns everyone's beloved green alien, Yoda (voiced by Frank Oz). Interestingly, he almost had a different name entirely.
In the earliest drafts of The Empire Strikes Back, George Lucas envisioned the character as a small, frog-like creature who was initially named "Buffy." The choice of this name might seem odd today, but it was part of Lucas's original concept. It was only later that his co-writer Leigh Brackett — who sadly passed away before filming commenced — proposed a change. She suggested the name "Minch Yoda," which was eventually shortened simply to "Yoda," a name that has since become iconic.
While we can only speculate whether Yoda would have been as endearing or successful with the name Buffy, it’s difficult to imagine Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) or other characters uttering that name with the same gravitas. The name "Buffy" just doesn’t seem to fit the wise, mystical figure we know today.
Interestingly, if Lucas had stuck with Buffy, it might have influenced other pop culture references. For instance, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s famous vampire slayer from Buffy the Vampire Slayer might have been called something else altogether, perhaps avoiding confusion but also losing some of its original charm.
In any case, the evolution of Yoda’s name highlights how even small details in film development can significantly shape iconic characters and their legacies.
