From Quiet Indie to Chaotic Road Trip? A24 Backs India Donaldson’s New Film

Brad Pitt’s also in — but not quite how you’d expect.
After making waves at Sundance with Good One, India Donaldson is back with her second feature — and this time, A24 and Plan B, Brad Pitt’s production company, are along for the ride.
Her new film, Chaperones, follows two friends, their dealer, and a troubled companion as they drive across the country in a pickup. A road movie? On the surface, yes. But with Donaldson at the wheel, we’re likely in for something more textured than the usual genre fare, I suppouse.
Her first film was often compared to the work of Kelly Reichardt — quiet, restrained, attentive to human tension in stillness. With Chaperones, we may be getting something more volatile, even chaotic. But knowing A24’s taste and Donaldson’s eye, I doubt this will follow the usual road movie formula.
No casting news yet, but that’s not the point — it’s exciting to see a young director stay true to her voice, and even more so to see A24 continue backing vision over trend. I’ll definitely be watching.
