The show missed a great chance to show Daenerys’s strong opponent.

Summary:

  • Game of Thrones ended back in 2019 on a very sad note given the plot twists and the fans’ reaction to them, but there was one important book storyline that could’ve made the show’s finale better if it had been included in the series.
  • George R.R. Martin’s book series features an unexpected appearance of Daenerys Targaryen’s relative that could have potentially become her rival in the fight for the Iron Throne.
  • The ignored storyline also introduces more details of other characters’ hidden intentions.

Game of Thrones started its phenomenal television history as one of the best fantasy shows of the modern times back in 2011 and ended it in 2019 being an almost total disappointment for the most devoted fans.

As the creators surely had to come up with the final plot twists themselves while George R.R. Martin was finishing the book (spoiler — he still does), the last season’s events brought a lot of changes to what had happened in the show before.

Despite all that, the creators still missed a chance to introduce another significant character that appears in Martin’s books — and this character could have drastically changed some major storylines.

A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series that the famous show is based on, introduces Daenerys Targaryen as the only possible heir to the Iron Throne after all her relatives died — but then a sudden plot twists occurs revealing that Dani in fact has a nephew, Aegon Targaryen, who was thought to have died as a child.

In the book, Aegon doesn’t make a surprising appearance in front of everyone — instead he’s just discovered by Tyrion Lannister who travels across Essos on his way to meeting Daenerys.

The latter’s newly found nephew becomes a significant part of the claim to the throne elaborated by Lord Varys who stays at the Lannisters’ court. It thus suggests that Tyrion could potentially see Aegon’s strength himself and use him for surpassing Daenerys in their race.

Aegon’s abrupt appearance symbolizes nothing but a real threat for Daenerys who thus loses her status of the only heir and even becomes a weaker competitor given that she’s a woman who has to fight for her rights to the throne with a man.

If Aegon had ever made it to the show, it could have potentially led to Daenerys choosing harsher methods on her way to owning the Iron Throne which would then accelerate her downgrade into villainy.

It thus comes clear that Aegon was a real-deal opportunity for the show creators that could’ve managed to demonstrate not only Lord Varys’s true intentions, but also to give an answer to the highly demanded question of how and when exactly Daenerys switched to dark side — the decision that resulted in catastrophic turn of events for her personally.
