HBO plans to finally explain House of the Dragon’s most mysterious storyline, but it might arrive way later than everyone hopes.
Coming off as an addition to Game of Thrones ’ TV legacy, House of the Dragon expands Westerosi history that George Martin dives deeper into in his book Blood & Fire, though it’s still not enough to remain faithful to A Song of Ice and Fire and its prequel novel’s enormous lore.
With Game of Thrones taking place hundreds of years later and thus not having to deal with many poorly explained narratives, things weren’t that complicated for the original show, which isn’t House of the Dragon’s case.
The latter and its second season in particular has been repeatedly criticised for dropping a tiny piece of completely new information without giving it a proper explanation and then just dumping it. However, HBO might be working on the issue now, and House of the Dragon is likely to receive its own prequel that fans have been waiting for all this time.
HBO Is Planning Another Mysterious Targaryen Show
The studio is currently getting things ready for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ release this year and working on House of the Dragon’s third instalment set to premiere sometime in 2025; however, HBO already has some ideas for what’s next in the TV version of George Martin’s fictional land.
As HBO executive Francesca Orsi hinted in an interview with Deadline, Game of Thrones’ story will remain frequent on the screens since she revealed that the company has “other spinoffs that we’re working on right now, one of which — which I won’t get into — is very promising, and it is still the Targaryen line”.
Considering numerous rumours that have been circulating in the media during the past couple of years, HBO is in fact likely to develop a separate show about Aegon Targaryen's conquest of Westeros. Having happened around 150 years before the events of House of the Dragon, the mysterious story keeps having a huge impact on the latter’s characters and their decisions in regard to the war between the Blacks and the Greens.
Aegon’s Conquest Series Is Likely to Arrive After House of the Dragon Is Wrapped Up
Despite other numerous rumours and speculations that suggest screenwriter Mattson Tomlin has been teaming up with George Martin for working on a new show about Aegon’s Conquest, the potential series still seems to be quite far from being greenlit and pushed into the production.
As of now, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms remain HBO’s top priorities which they won’t turn away from until at least one of them is completely finished.
Between these two, House of the Dragon will likely come to its end earlier, so the company will have free hands to start a brand new project with right after the prequel is done with its fourth and final season.
Considering House of the Dragon’s release dynamics with the previous two seasons, the show will conclude sometime by 2028, which is probably the time we might expect another Targaryen series to be dropped.
