Gaten Matarazzo Hints at a Tragic Death in the 'Stranger Things' Finale: "Get Some Tissues"
The character who was originally supposed to die in the first season could become the writers' victim.
The nearly decade-long Stranger Things saga is approaching its climax, and it looks like the series has a severe test in store for fans.
Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin, hinted that the finale will be emotionally challenging.
Gaten Matarazzo Hints That We'll Need Emotional Support During the 'Stranger Things' Finale
In his message to fans, Gaten offered no empty consolation but advised them to prepare for loss:
“I understand the anxiety. I hear you. We're all here for all that support for whatever happens. If your favorite is no longer with us or not, who knows?
I don't really have any words of comfort. To do the most prep you can: get some tissues, get some ice cream, get some friends, and some family.”
This hint aligns with other warning signs. For instance, in the trailer for the second half of the final season, Dustin and Steve reprise their iconic line from Season 3: "If you die, I die."
This emphasis does not seem to be accidental and suggests a warning of a tragic outcome for one of them.
Earlier, in one of the interviews, the show's creators, the Duffer Brothers, knocked a Funko Pop figurine of Steve off a table, which fans immediately interpreted as an ominous sign.
Sorry, Steve Fans, but He Is the Most Obvious Character to Die So Far

Steve tops the list of characters most likely to die and there are several compelling reasons for this. First, the creators have never killed off a main cast member before, but they may need such a sacrifice for the final, most intense moment – and Steve seems the perfect victim.
Second, Steve's character arc is complete: he has gone from being a narcissistic brat to being a selfless protector of the kids and Dustin's best friend. Sacrificing himself to save his friends would be a powerful conclusion to his transformation.
Furthermore, such a conclusion would resolve the love triangle with Nancy and Jonathan once and for all.
Interestingly, Steve's fate has been uncertain since the beginning – he was supposed to be killed off in the first season, but the actor playing him, Joe Keery, was so charismatic that the character was saved. Now, it seems the reprieve has ended.
