Cate’s background is what makes this character so ambiguous. Yes, she did terrible things. But she is a traumatized young woman which is not her fault really.

Like many supes, Cate was injected with Compound V as a child, which granted her superpowers to basically tell people what to do and they will obey. But her abilities came at a cost. At the age of 11, during a family camping trip, she unintentionally used her powers on her younger brother leading him to wander into the woods, never to return.

This traumatic event caused a rift between Cate and her family, especially her mother, who felt unsafe around her. Eventually, Indira Shetty stepped into her life, helping Cate control her powers and reintroducing her to the world, but at the same time literally using Cate for her own purpose.

Why Do Gen V Fans Want Cate to Survive?

Many fans empathize with her tragic past and the immense guilt she carries. They want to see Cate to have a somewhat redemption arc to prove her worth.

However, some fans predict a bittersweet ending for Cate. They believe that Cate will have a chance to redeem herself, but she either dies anyway or her redemptive act (whatever it may be) will be the reason for her death.

Cate has powerful telepathic abilities, which she refers to as "pushing." By combining tactile contact with verbal guidance, Cate can influence individuals to carry out actions, even those against their best interests.
