You’ll have to wait for House of the Dragon’s next season to see those beloved characters again.

An HBO hit drama House of the Dragon isn’t coming back with new episodes anytime soon, but Game of Thrones ’ fans have another upcoming show to fill the void with. The original series’ yet another prequel titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is almost ready for its release sometime this year, as George Martin confirmed in his personal blog.

The writer also shared some sneak peeks into the future show’s storyline, stating that he was just blown away by how masterfully his story was brought to the screen. This, however, didn’t come without some disappointing revelations for those fascinated by Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon’s fantastic beasts.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Won’t Show the Targaryens’ Dragons, but They’re Still Important

Though the show is based on Martin’s The Tales of Dunk & Egg, with the whole story revolving pretty much around Prince Aegon Targaryen aka Egg, the plot line takes place during the time when dragons were in a huge dynasty crisis themselves, resulting in their quite literal extinction which lasted for decades.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will pick up the story almost 70 years after Westeros witnessed the last dragon and its rider. However, the Targaryens are still the heart of the show, and the dragon as the dynasty’s symbol might as well stay in there, especially since A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is confirmed to introduce Aerion Brightflame, a Targaryen prince who kicked his family’s curse off becoming the first example of “Targaryen madness.”

In George Martin’s books, Aerion is firm in his belief that he’s a dragon locked up in a human body; years later he will die after drinking wildfire which, as he hoped, would help him turn into a real dragon.

George Martin Confirms A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Is Driven by Characters and Not by Action

The dragons’ absence in the upcoming show might turn out to be a sad plot twist for those who enjoyed dragon fights in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, and Martin seems to completely understand everyone’s frustration.

“Viewers who are looking for action, and more action, and only action… well, this one may not satisfy you. There’s a huge fight scene here, as exciting as anyone could ask for, but there are no dragons this time around, no huge battles, no white walkers,” Martin said in his blog.

Instead, the show will take a closer look at its characters’ morality since, as Martin revealed, “this is a character piece, and its focus is on duty and honor, on chivalry and all it means.”

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ first season hasn’t received its premiere date so far, but the author reassured fans that the series will be released later this year, “maybe in the fall.”
