Godzilla Minus Zero doesn't open where Minus One left off, and the time that has passed shows on almost every returning face.

Godzilla Minus Zero opens in Japan on November 3, 2026, and in North America on November 6 through GKIDS. Takashi Yamazaki is back as writer, director and visual effects supervisor, and so is the cast of Godzilla Minus One, the 2023 film that made $116 million worldwide on a budget of roughly $10–15 million and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Ōishi, Sae Nagatani as their adopted daughter Akiko, and Hidetaka Yoshioka as weapons engineer Kenji Noda.

The answer: two years

Minus Zero is set in 1949. The official synopsis puts it plainly: the film "picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One."

That two-year gap is not a random number. It's the same length as Minus One itself.

How long Minus One lasts

Minus One covers roughly two years of postwar history, and it moves through them fast:

  • 1945 — In the last days of World War II, Shikishima lands his Zero on Odo Island, claiming engine trouble to avoid his suicide mission. Godzilla attacks the garrison that night, and he freezes instead of firing.
  • Late 1945 — Back in a bombed-out Tokyo, he learns his parents are dead, takes in Noriko and an orphaned baby, Akiko, and joins a minesweeping crew.
  • 1946 — American nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll mutate Godzilla into the giant that heads for Japan.
  • May 1947 — The crew tries to stall Godzilla near the Ogasawara Islands. Days later, it lands in Ginza, where Noriko is caught in the blast after pushing Shikishima to safety.
  • 1947 — Noda's plan in Sagami Bay sinks Godzilla, and Shikishima flies a Shinden fighter into its mouth, ejecting before the explosion.

The ending had two loose threads. Shikishima finds Noriko alive in a hospital, with a black mark creeping up her neck. And deep in the ocean, a chunk of Godzilla's flesh starts to regenerate as it sinks.

Two years is how long the war's survivors needed to rebuild. It's also how long Godzilla needed.

What two years changed

The Shikishimas are a family now. Kōichi and Noriko are married and raising Akiko, who was a baby in 1945 and would be about four by 1949. Shikishima is living as a devoted family man, a long way from the pilot who couldn't pull the trigger on Odo Island.

Noriko's injuries from Ginza didn't vanish. In Fangoria's review, Michael Gingold notes she now wears an eyepatch from that rampage, and she's anxious about her husband going back to fight.

Noda, meanwhile, got an official title. He now leads the government's Large-Scale Disaster Response Bureau, which is what pulls Shikishima back in. The team also gains a meteorologist, Makoto Aoyama, who wants redemption after the government buried her typhoon warnings.

The first threat of 1949 isn't Godzilla. A one-headed Ghidorah attacks Matsumoto City, and the response is built around a bomb supplied by the American military. The team wants an alternative to it, and that alternative turns out to be the monster from the sea.

As Joey Magidson of Awards Radar puts it, "Godzilla rises from the ocean, fully regenerated." That's the chunk of flesh from Minus One's final shot, two years later and finished healing.

Where Minus Zero sits in Godzilla history

Minus One and Minus Zero together span 1945 to 1949, and both stop short of the year Godzilla first reached movie screens. Ishirō Honda's original Godzilla opened in Japan on November 3, 1954, five years after Minus Zero's story and exactly 72 years before Minus Zero's own release date.
