Gremlins 3 teaser shows off a new Mogwai, but the release date moves to 2028 — the delay isn't about production at all

Warner Bros. dropped an 11-second teaser for Gremlins 3 on Wednesday: a quick, shadowy shot of a Mogwai, a title card, and a date — October 6, 2028. Which is the actual news, because the film had been penciled in for November 19, 2027. That's a delay of nearly a year, announced for a movie that still has no title, no cast, and no plot.

Here's the thing, though: the smart read is that this isn't a troubled-production story. It's a calendar story.

Follow the release grid, not the rumor mill

• It's not the merger. The shift lands mid–Warner Bros. Discovery–Paramount merger, but Collider reports the merger didn't drive the move — for Gremlins 3 or for DC's Dynamic Duo, which slid from June to September 2028 the same day. Paramount had no conflicts with either date.
• November was a trap. The old slot would have thrown a horror-comedy about Christmas monsters directly against Disney's Frozen 3 in the family-blockbuster corridor. Early October, meanwhile, is a proven WB launchpad — Joker opened there and rode off with over a billion dollars.
• Halloween fits the brand. A franchise about adorable pets that turn into murderous goblins arguably always belonged to spooky season, not the week before Thanksgiving.

The studio itself gave no official reason, and to be fair, cameras aren't rolling yet either. But everything WB has actually done signals commitment, not cold feet: it re-confirmed the creative team alongside the date. Chris Columbus — who wrote the 1984 original — directs from a script he's co-writing with Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, with Steven Spielberg back as executive producer. WB film boss Jesse Ehrman set the tone when the studio announced the revival:

"Few titles are as beloved and iconic as 'Gremlins.'"

Thirty-eight years between batches

By October 2028, it will have been 38 years since Gremlins 2: The New Batch — the 1990 sequel that flopped at $41 million and then aged into one of the great cult comedies. The original did $212 million on an $11 million budget and helped scare the MPAA into inventing PG-13. Joe Dante, who directed both, isn't involved this time, and the franchise's only activity since has been the HBO Max animated prequel Secrets of the Mogwai, which ran two seasons through 2025. As World of Reel put it after the teaser landed, whatever else the delay means, Gremlins 3 is

"no longer just a pipe dream."

One small comedy of errors to close on: outlets couldn't even agree on the new date at first — at least one report listed a different October day, while the teaser itself says October 6. Believe the date card.
