We heart you, Zander Perez.

Summary:

  • Zander Perez was a character on ABC’s staple drama Grey’s Anatomy.
  • The role was originated by Zaiver Sinnett, who is an active writer for both Grey’s Anatomy and its spinoff Station 19.
  • Perez was present for seasons 16 to 18 only, but fans want to see him back.

If there's one thing that's great about television, it's that once you've reached a certain level of seniority, you can move around the set and try out different areas of the show's production without having to actively look for another job. This is a privilege rarely found in other professions, and industry professionals recognize and take advantage of it.

As an audience, we have seen many instances of actors trying their hand at directing or producing a show, as well as directors stepping out of the shadows behind the camera and into the spotlight as one of the characters. Writers, however, aren't really known for changing positions as often.

Zaiver Sinnett, who started out as an assistant on the Grey's Anatomy set and then worked his way into the writers' room, wasn't the first to make the jump from crew to cast member. But he was the first to stick with fans so much that they are still clamoring for his return to the small screen.

However, as he continues to write for both Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off Station 19, the said comeback is not very likely to happen. As Sinnett shared in an interview with Shondaland, he is very grateful for the opportunity to act from the standpoint of perfecting his writing skills.

“Acting has made me a better writer. Because I’ve been on set and know how to analyze a scene in front of the camera, it’s given me a new perspective. When I write scenes now, I look at them differently,” he said.

All that the viewers are left with are sweet memories of how great his character, Zander Perez, was, and how much more fun he made each episode he appeared in.

Who Is Zander Perez?

Zander Perez was a character on Grey's Anatomy who was first introduced in the show's 16th season. As you can imagine, a show that started in 2004 doesn't really have a lot of points of connection with the younger generation, but Perez quickly became one.

From his upbeat personality to his "no BS" attitude towards any kind of discrimination, every moment with Perez could only be described as iconic. Speaking of iconic, Zander also seemed to be the only person at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital who knew Internet slang.

Not only was he hilarious, but he felt like a character that those Gen Z viewers who somehow found their way to Grey's Anatomy could relate to. For much of the fanbase, surgical resident Perez was a breath of fresh air that the show had needed for a long time, especially during the events of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The character had a great run and seemed very well balanced. Although he was far from the main character, his story felt more logical and well thought out than some of the veterans. However, in season 18, viewers learned that the surgical residency program had been cancelled, so his arc was also over.

If you want to revisit Grey's Anatomy and refresh your memory about Zander Perez, you can stream the show on Hulu or Netflix. And if you're more interested in what's next, keep an eye out for more news about the show's upcoming season 20.
