Dr. Cristina Yang is not coming to Seattle.

Summary:

  • In the 20 years that Grey's Anatomy has been on ABC, there have been many beloved characters who have left the show at some point.
  • After a brief return of Jessica Capshaw's Dr. Arizona Robbins, fans began a campaign to bring back another favorite, Dr. Cristina Yang.
  • Although Sandra Oh was touched to know that fans still want her on Grey's, she had to decline the invitation... at least for now.

With the show running for two decades now, cast changes are pretty much inevitable. There aren't many actors who are willing to commit that much time to just one project, so they have to come and go after a while. That doesn't mean they can't come back.

Since the return of one of Grey's Anatomy's most beloved characters in season 20, viewers have been eager for an update on other characters they once loved but then lost touch with. Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang, of course, was at the top of everyone's list.

Will Cristina Yang Be Back to Grey’s Anatomy?

Cristina Yang has been one of the show's main characters since season 1 in 2005. Along with Meredith Grey, Alex Karev, George O'Malley and Izzie Stevens, she joined the surgical internship program and competed with them to become a surgeon. Throughout her years of study, she grew into a top-notch cardiothoracic surgeon.

The last time we saw Cristina was in season 10, when she left for Switzerland, where she still lives. After that, Oh's character was mentioned several times, and was seen from behind at Derek Shepherd's funeral. However, the actress never returned to the show, remaining behind the camera.

Fans were adamant that bringing Cristina back would have been the biggest surprise and heartwarming gift Shondaland could have given them. But it still hasn't happened. Unfortunately, according to the latest update from Sandra Oh herself, viewers will have to brace themselves for another round of waiting.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the world premiere of her new project, HBO's spy thriller The Sympathiser, the actress responded to those Grey's Anatomy viewers who still want to see her back on their screens:

“I love that I love that people are still [fans].I love that you asked me that, because Cristina Yang is, of course, near and dear to my heart," Oh shared. "[But] I will say, not anytime soon, my love,” Oh said.

It's not just fans who want to see the actress back as Cristina Yang, but some of her co-stars as well. Kevin McKidd, who plays Dr. Owen Hut on the show, has been very open about a possible storyline with Oh's character, considering their complicated romantic past together.

Ellen Pompeo's Meredith Grey would also likely be over the moon to see her best friend back in town.

For now, though, all we can do is wait and hope that one day these dreams will come true. Until then, be sure to tune in to Grey's Anatomy every Thursday on ABC to not miss another episode of the 20th anniversary season.
