Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein': Plot, Release Date & Everything We Know

Will Frankenstein be released in theaters? Will it follow the original novel closely? Here are all the details about one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
In November, Netflix will release Guillermo del Toro's new movie – Frankenstein. It is going to be an unconventional reimagining of Mary Shelley's famous Gothic novel.
The original novel is one of del Toro's favorite books, and he has dreamed of making an adaptation for almost 25 years. Here's everything we know about the upcoming movie.
'Frankenstein' Release Date & Theatrical Run
Frankenstein will be released on Netflix in November 2025, though a specific date has not yet been announced. Guillermo del Toro has collaborated with the streaming on his last three projects: Pinocchio, 3Below: Tales of Arcadia and Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities.
Fans of the director are upset that Frankenstein will only be available on a streaming platform. However, the director himself announced on social media that the movie will be released in theaters. It is not yet clear when, though.
What Will 'Frankenstein' Be About?
There is no detailed plot, but it is clear that the movie will closely follow the novel and focus on the story of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who encroached on God's work by creating a creature from dead flesh.
As in the original, the action will take place in a 19th-century European town and somewhere in the ice of the North Pole.
In the trailer, however, there is a character that was not in Mary Shelley's novel – a red creature. This character is typical of del Toro's works, like the Angel of Death in Hellboy II or the red ghost in Crimson Peak.
These characters, who act as guides between the worlds of the living and the dead, usually exist only in the protagonist's imagination.
'Frankenstein' Cast
Guillermo del Toro has assembled a brilliant cast. Oscar Isaac, who portrayed Leto Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's Dune, was cast as Victor Frankenstein.
Jacob Elordi, known for playing Nate in Euphoria and Felix in Saltburn, will play the monster. Mia Goth, who starred in the X trilogy by Ti West, will play Victor Frankenstein's fiancée, Elizabeth.
The movie will also star Charles Dance, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, Ralph Ineson, and David Bradley.
Why Is 'Frankenstein' Worth Waiting For?
Guillermo del Toro is a director with a distinctive style. He creates unique, visually inimitable movies at the intersection of science fiction, fantasy and horror.
For del Toro, Frankenstein is a very personal project that he has been trying to bring to life for almost 25 years. Back in 2010, he wrote on his X account:
“Book of the day: FRANKENSTEIN by Mary Shelley. My favorite book of all time. An emotional autobiography.”
The Gothic horror story looks like the perfect addition to the director's filmography, so there is every reason to look forward to Frankenstein.
