Guy Ritchie to Direct Road House 2 After Doug Liman Exit: Can He Save the Franchise?

Doug Liman’s Road House reboot had quite a messy release back in 2024, and a future sequel to the movie is already trying hard to do things right. Guy Ritchie’s involvement might not be the solution though.
Things are moving forward for Jake Gyllenhaal ’s meh action movie Road House pretty fast, and Guy Ritchie is now officially on board to prevent yet another potential scandal.
The movie, which came as a remake of a 1989 classic film of the same name, had a premiere full of speculations about its director’s feud with Amazon MGM, though it still didn’t let the talks die down now that a sequel is in the works too.
Considering Road House’s average performance with both critics and viewers, some are already convinced Ritchie’s participation is unlikely to change a thing — here’s why.
Guy Ritchie Will Helm Road House Sequel Instead of Doug Liman
It might be that the original director’s name is now forever tied to a major clash with Amazon MGM which wouldn’t let Road House get a theatrical release back in the day, but it seems like Liman has nothing to do with the continuation of the story whatsoever.
According to Variety, Ritchie will direct from the script of Bad Boys: Ride or Die’s writer Will Beall, while Jake Gyllenhaal is set to reprise his role of ex-UFC fighter and now bouncer Elwood Dalton.
The first movie, despite all the scandals it had to deal with, was a major success for Amazon MGM which last March reported about Road House becoming “the most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis”, as Amazon’s then-studio chief Jennifer Salke revealed.
However, the film didn’t perform that well with critics and audiences, eventually securing average scores on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.
- On Rotten Tomatoes, Road House keeps scores of 60% and 52% from critics and viewers
- On IMDb, the movie is rated 6.2/10
Road House Sequel News Isn’t That Exciting Even for Guy Ritchie Fans
Even though the director has earned himself a spot among the most acclaimed filmmakers and action movie masters, some are still not seeing anything good in his name being attached to Liman’s controversial thriller.
“Ohh great another soulless amazon film where guy ritchie only shows up to push record....the quality difference in his movies that go to streaming vs cinema are insane”, grizzlyadams1990 pointed out.
“I’m surprised this is getting a sequel. It really wasn’t that good. Did it actually make enough money to justify making another one?”, ktulu0 wondered.
“The full title of the movie reads as: “Road House 2: let’s try it with Guy Ritchie this time and hope it will be less of a steaming pile of crap””, Right_Hour noted sarcastically.
