Hacks: how many seasons there are in total, and why the series finale nearly ended at a European clinic
The Emmy hoarder is done for good — and the way it almost said goodbye was planned longer ago than anyone guessed.
The count, for anyone arriving late or googling mid-binge: Hacks ran five seasons, from 2021 to 2026, collecting a dozen-plus Emmys along the way. The fifth and final season premiered April 9, 2026, and the series finale landed on HBO Max on May 28. There is no season 6. There is, however, one hell of a story about how it ended — and how close "ended" came to meaning something much darker.
The clinic
Spoilers, obviously. The finale reveals Deborah Vance's cancer has returned and spread — and instead of treatment, she books a farewell tour of Europe with Ava as her reluctant plus-one. Real bread in Paris, flea-market salt-and-pepper shakers, a verdict that the Mona Lisa is mid — and a final destination: an assisted-suicide clinic in Switzerland. The entire episode is Ava trying to argue her best friend out of dying, and losing.
Until the last minutes. One final joke-riffing session makes Deborah realize cancer is, among other things, another hour of material — more stories she hasn't told on stage yet. She changes her mind, schedules treatment, and asks Ava the question the whole series was building to:
"Will you help me write it?"
The closing shot dissolves a Paris street into the replica Eiffel Tower of the Paris Las Vegas, Garland and Streisand crooning "Get Happy," the two of them still trading death jokes down the Strip.

Planned since before you'd heard of it
The wildest part, per the creators' post-finale press rounds:
- The Swiss-clinic ending was in the original pitch — Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky sold the show in 2019 with this exact finale attached. Deborah was never going to die; the fakeout was the design.
- Whether season 5 was the end stayed genuinely undecided deep into the writing of the final ten episodes — when the creators told press they didn't know, they weren't lying.
- Jean Smart deliberately never asked how the show would end, for years. When she finally found out, she was — as she told Variety — "surprised and a little taken aback."
She came around; she's since called this her favorite season. As for what's next: the trio has a new project quietly in development at HBO, and when asked about ever revisiting Deborah and Ava, their answer — delivered in unison — was "never say never."
