Now semi-retired, Douglas reflects on lasting legacy and change.

Michael Douglas may not be officially retired, but his latest appearance at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival suggests he’s easing gently out of the spotlight. At 80, the actor hasn’t worked since 2022 and says he has "no real intentions of going back" — unless something truly exceptional comes along. "I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years," he admitted. "And I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set."

Douglas was in the Czech spa town to present a newly restored print of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the 1975 classic he produced, which went on to win five Academy Awards. The screening marked 50 years since the film was first shown in Karlovy Vary — a fitting occasion for reflection.

"The festival was just beginning when we first came here," he recalled. "It’s highly unusual to be supporting and honouring a movie from 50 years ago. It was a reminder for me of how special that picture was."

During a press conference, Douglas also turned his attention to the changing landscape of cinema. Reflecting on the legendary Oscars lineup of 1976, which included Cuckoo’s Nest, Jaws, Dog Day Afternoon, Barry Lyndon and Nashville, he asked: "In the last 20 years, has there ever been anywhere near that kind of quality of movies there?" A fair question — and one that many cinephiles might echo. His tone wasn’t bitter, just thoughtful. There’s a kind of clarity that comes with longevity.

As for what comes next, Douglas says he’s content focusing on his health, family, and long-time marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones. With a wink, he offered: "In the spirit of maintaining a good marriage, I’m happy to play the wife." There may be one small independent project in the works, but for now, it seems the legendary actor is enjoying the rare gift of stillness — and a well-earned pause.
