HBO left Lanterns off its Emmy list — so is Lanterns season 2 renewed or canceled? The status after the finale
The ratings say yes, the writers' room says yes, James Gunn kind of says yes, and the one man who actually decides keeps not saying anything.
Short answer: neither. Lanterns wrapped its eight-episode first season on HBO on October 4, 2026, and HBO has not renewed it or canceled it. Which is a weird place to leave a show that just did this:
- Its August 16 premiere drew 9.3 million global viewers in three days, per TheWrap, making it DC Studios' biggest series premiere on HBO Max and a top-five premiere for the platform overall.
- It beat the opening numbers for It: Welcome to Derry, The Penguin, and True Detective: Night Country.
- Episode 3 grew to 10 million global viewers.
And yet.
The Emmy list problem
In a Deadline interview after the Emmys in September, HBO chief Casey Bloys walked through what the network plans to bring to the 2027 Emmys, which cover shows released between June 1, 2026, and May 31, 2027. Lanterns premiered in August 2026, so it's eligible. It wasn't on his list.
Deadline also asked whether anything at DC beyond The People v. Gorilla Grodd was in active development. His answer:
"No, not right now."
— Casey Bloys
Bloys did name Lanterns in that interview, as part of HBO's DC track record. A second season never came up.
The case for optimism
Meanwhile, the people making the show are acting like season 2 is happening. Showrunner Chris Mundy told The Hollywood Reporter in August that he was about six weeks into breaking a new season with Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher Cantwell, who confirmed it himself on Bluesky: "Yes, I'm joining LANTERNS Season 2." Co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King have moved on, to The Chain and Mister Miracle respectively.
He also didn't pretend any of that guarantees a green light:
"The question is whether [season two] is a story people are interested in."
— Chris Mundy
Then there's James Gunn. When a fan on Threads asked him to confirm that October 4 was a season finale and not a series finale, the DC Studios co-chief wrote back, "Season finale, correct." Plenty of fans read that as a renewal. A final season also ends with a season finale.
HBO has a hit DC show, a staffed writers' room, and a boss who didn't put it on his Emmy list.
What's actually holding it up
The Ankler's Lesley Goldberg reported on September 11 that a renewal is "not imminent," and Puck reported that the writers' room has so far produced pitch pages, not scripts. And the decision now runs through a company in transition: Paramount Skydance's takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO's parent, was set to close on October 6, 2026.
