HBO Max Name Change Has Fans in Stitches: What Was the Point?
HBO Max turned just Max is going back to its OG name. Was the change really that necessary in the first place? The good thing is that the situation resulted in a lot of hilarious responses.
Rebranding is hard to pull off, and a good rebranding is nearly impossible to nail. Yet even knowing this, HBO Max still tried it. Back in 2023 they changed it to Max, leaving us all confused and wondering: why?
Well, it turns out we aren't the only ones thinking about it. HQ was wondering the same thing since they recently announced that HBO is making a comeback.
Why Is HBO Max Only Now Coming Back to Its Roots?

During the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront, David Zaslav (the CEO and president of WBD) revealed:
“The powerful growth we have seen in our global streaming service is built around the quality of our programming. Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.”
Casey Bloys (the CEO of HBO and Max Content) also had a few things to say. He explained that the return of HBO represents today's company better.
“With the course we are on and strong momentum we are enjoying, we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition. And it clearly states our implicit promise to deliver content that is recognized as unique,” Bloys said.
Internet Is Losing It Over HBO Max Rebranding
HBO gave us The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Succession, and many more iconic TV shows that we love and cherish till this day. They are HBO shows, not Max Shows (let's be real, nobody is referring to them as such).
“Remember, people got paid millions and millions of dollars to make these decisions,” Redditor ParallelMusic said.
“I'm just hoping they make me download an entirely new app for this change,” Redditor akintu joked.
“Can’t believe sidelining the ultimate name in quality TV in favor of showcasing My 600 Pound Sister Wife didn’t work out like they planned,” Redditor ArsenalBOS wrote.
HBO Max Is Actually In On the Joke
The team behind HBO social media is handling the rebranding like the pros they are. Their bio currently reads as:
“These rebrands are trying to murder me.”
They even made a reference to their own comedy show Girls with this post:
