Heartstopper’s Fate Decided: New Netflix Movie to End Nick and Charlie Story

Heartstopper has been winning hearts since 2022, but there was a chance we wouldn't get a proper finale. Stay here to learn the latest news on what changed!
Netflix has greenlit a Heartstopper movie, which will serve as a finale for the entire story of Nick and Charlie, Deadline reported. The good news followed after months of uncertainty and fears that the beloved show won’t get its perfect ending.
But it's not exactly what fans have been hoping for. The most obvious route would have been to add another season, which would have been the show's fourth, and explore Nick and Charlie's story a little longer.
The series stars Joe Locke and Kit Connor will star and exec produce, and Wash Westmoreland will be the director. The series creator Alice Oseman will be back as writer. She also indicated that the last book of the series, Vol 6, will come out after the TV story's conclusion.
Oseman shared a heartfelt post on Instagram about the upcoming film, noting she is "deeply relieved and so excited about this new creative venture".
It’s pretty lovely that the announcement comes on the third anniversary of Heartstopper‘s April 22, 2022 series premiere.
What Do Fans Think About Heartstopper Movie Finale?
Fans mostly share Oseman's sentiment, noting that Heartstopper is lucky to even get the chance to wrap up its story, unlike many unjustly canceled Netflix projects.
"I know people will be disappointed it’s not a full season but I’m going to look at the bright side. We get to see their story conclude and some content is better than no content," said Redditor tlk199317.
Some people even prefer to view the upcoming movie as an actual season, just in another format.
"While a new season would be ideal, I can handle a movie too. As long as it's not like an hour long, but a full feature 2+ hour movie that wraps it all in a nice bow. Since the show runs about 30 minutes an episode, at least with that, we'd technically be getting about 4 episodes worth of a season in a movie. I'm just thrilled they finally pulled the trigger and got something going," noted Redditor Local_Tackle43.
Naturally, others can't hide their disappointment.
"This reads very, ‘Netflix didn’t want to give us money for a fourth season, and they were gonna just cancel the show, but we were able to convince them to at least give us a film to wrap it all up, which was a big fight to get even that,’" said Redditor DALTT.
What Is Heartstopper About?
Heartstopper is a show that could easily be described as a romantic comedy, but it is actually so much more than a show about two people falling in love. The series follows a shy and rather complicated boy named Charlie, who knows he is gay and is not afraid to show it to the world, even though he knows he may be bullied.
But his self-esteem is shattered when he becomes involved with a closeted high school student, Ben, who makes Charlie seem unlovable. One day, Charlie is rescued from Ben by Nick, a seemingly heterosexual guy who Charlie develops a crush on.
Since that moment the two of them become inseparable and realize they are perfect for each other. However, their relationship gets complicated once Nick discovers Charlie has a mental health issue that he is nor ready to confront. Still, together they go through it as well.
Season 3 made it sure that there’s another problem approaching: Nick will have to leave for college, and Charlie will have to find a way to stay without him. And that’s what the Heartstopper movie would have to address.
