Morpheus actor Laurence Fishburne has no regrets about not being part of The Matrix Resurrections released in theaters and on HBO Max last year.

The Matrix legendary franchise is hugely dependent on powerful characters as well as a stunning plot that has become a big part of pop culture since the very first Matrix movie hit theaters back in 1999. It is hard to find a person who doesn't know Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus. These three are kind of like The Holy Trinity – pun intended – of all things real in the Matrix universe. And while Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss playing Neo and Trinity did get to reunite in the new Matrix 4 movie, Laurence Fishburne was not given such a chance.

The character of Morpheus, that represents the leader and teacher we all would like to have when breaking into real adult life, has found its way into both people's hearts and social feeds. The absence of Fishburne's memorable figure in the fourth Matrix movie made millions of fans question the casting choices of the Resurrections creators, namely Lana Wachowski, who reportedly hasn't asked Fishburne to join the fourth part of the franchise.

To be fair, the plot of The Matrix Resurrections takes place 60 years after the events of the Matrix Revolutions, making it hard for the original Morpheus to return. The Nebuchadnezzar captain is long dead according to the movie, but the Morpheus image is not. Just like in the movie's title, Morpheus has been resurrected as artificial intelligence played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, a decision that left many fans confused as well as the decision to replace Hugo Weaving, who played the main villain Agent Smith in the original Matrix trilogy.

However, Laurence Fishburne doesn't seem to hold any grudges against the Resurrections creators. When asked by Variety at the premiere of his new show The School for Good and Evil if he had any regrets about not being a part of the Matrix reboot, Fishburne simply said, "No, not really."

As for his overall impressions of the movie, the actor complemented the performance of his former co-stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss and added that the movie wasn't as bad as he thought it would be… and wasn't as good as he hoped it would be.

What a Morpheus thing to say!
