Here's What's Wrong With Shrek 5 Teaser, According to Fans

The franchise has just released the first look at its next instalment, and it doesn’t look good.
For many, Shrek has long remained a beloved childhood memory that reserved its own place in everyone’s hearts; this is why it wasn’t really surprising to see the overall excitement when DreamWorks announced a new movie coming to theatres in December of 2026, roughly 16 years after the previous instalment’s release back in 2010.
However, things have just shifted dramatically for the franchise’s long standing fans after Shrek 5 had its first official teaser dropped several hours ago, causing several speculations on whether reviving the franchise was a good idea after all.
The video also announced that Zendaya joined the cast voicing Shrek and Fiona’s daughter Felicia, and the latter was also quick to catch everyone’s attention, causing yet another controversy.
Shrek 5 Receives Massive Backlash After Posting the First Teaser
While there’s still more than a year left until the movie hits the screens, Shrek 5 is already not what many fans could ever have expected.
The 28-second teaser features some lead characters who, well, look quite different: the animation style was altered due to many years having passed in both real and fictional worlds, with Shrek, Fiona and Donkey looking drastically different from what we were used to in previous four movies.
Additionally, Shrek and Fiona’s grown-up daughter Felicia also makes her debut here.
The video quickly brought outraged fans together as they repeatedly attacked Shrek 5’s creators, slamming them for creating a completely different animated movie that had nothing to do with the style that the previous films had.
“This looks like a McDonalds commercial for Shrek, not another Shrek movie”, Redditor ChiefLeef22 commented.
Other user Mamsies pointed out that the upcoming movie’s animation looks “too smooth and cartoony”.
Fans Also Have Doubts About Zendaya’s Felicia
Despite causing the biggest issue for Shrek 5 so far, the updated animation style wasn’t the only problem that had fans thinking. In the teaser, Zendaya’s Felicia appears with brown eyes while Shrek’s most diehard fans don’t need to be reminded that baby Felicia’s eyes in previous films were blue.
On Reddit, some suggested the character wasn’t even Felicia at all, even though Shrek and Fiona have no more daughters, as user PowerPulser said that “this unnamed girl refers to Shrek as "dad". However, Felicia has blue eyes and not bright brown eyes. Meaning that this character is actually trans Farkle”.
Others had another fair point though, stating that the franchise might have followed some notions existing in real life since kids’ eyes color often changes with time; there’s also a saying about Shrek 5’s creators aiming at making Felicia look more like Zendaya who actually voices the character.
These theories might remain a mystery until Shrek 5 is released in theatres on December 23, 2026.
