The disaster movie also starring Daisy Edgar-Jones found a box office success that paved the way for a potential franchise.

It’s been a while since the sequel era has started its reign in Hollywood, but things are moving forward now since a sequel to a 1996 disaster movie has reportedly received, well, its own sequel too.

Released back in 2024, the movie with Anyone Buy You’s Glen Powell and Normal People’s Daisy Edgar Jones among the leads became a massive hit in the box office, despite some fears that this could’ve been a risky challenge for a flick with an impressive budget of more than $150 million.

Ultimately, the movie was also a record-breaking matter and, apparently, came as a story promising enough to receive a continuation.

Twisters May Have Just Got a Sequel

Released roughly a year ago, the disaster movie was likely a long-awaited piece of the genre as, according to insider Daniel Ritchman, a sequel to Twisters is reportedly already in the works.

Ironically, the film itself came as a follow-up to Jan de Bont’s 1996 movie Twister, which, in its turn, follows a group of storm chasers trying to deploy a ground-breaking tornado data-gathering device during a massive outbreak in Oklahoma.

The 2024 sequel offers a slightly different story directly connected to the deadly storm, revolving around Edgar-Jones’ Kate Cooper who stayed away from delving into natural disasters after one of those resulted in her personal tragedy.

This soon changes when Kate is brought back on track after reuniting with her college friend Javi who suggests she joins the team that is about to test a new storm-tracking system.

However, there’s another sudden turn when social media superstar Tyler Owens also embarks on a mission to chase the imminent storm that would likely bring him more devoted followers. As the storm season intensifies, the group has to find a way to cooperate without letting another big tragedy occur.

Despite winning big mostly in the US and not doing so well internationally, the movie opened to a record-breaking success, having the best-ever opening weekend for a disaster film since The Day After Tomorrow was released back in 2004.

With a budget of $155 million, Twisters grossed around $372 million, later on continuing its streak on digital platforms. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is currently holding scores of 75% and 90% from critics and audiences respectively.
