'House of the Dragon' Season 3 Episode 8 Explained: What Happened to Helaena?

The final episode of the third season of House of the Dragon was full of spectacular and ominous events. Rhaenyra's grip on power continues to crumble as she loses her humanity and transforms into a cruel ruler driven by a fanatical belief in prophecy.

Tumbleton becomes the site of one of the largest battles in Westeros' history, the outcome of which is decided by betrayal. The brother kings are suddenly reunited, and the finale promises a climactic tragedy and a new, dark prophecy.

What Happened in King's Landing?

Rhaenyra learns that Aegon and his dragon, Sunfyre, have "risen from the dead." Panicking, she goes to Daemon, who convinces her that harsh action is justified and necessary.

That same day, Rhaenyra banishes her advisor Mysaria without explanation. As Mysaria leaves, she warns Helaena that Rhaenyra views her unborn child as nothing more than a hostage. Helaena languishes in captivity and refuses food and Rhaenyra orders the guards to force-feed her.

The conflict between Rhaenyra and the High Septon reaches its peak when she demands to be recognized as queen, but he refuses, citing the arrival of the "true king."

Rhaenyra then orders the High Septon's assassination and gathers a crowd to publicly reveal the secret of the A Song of Ice and Fire prophecy. However, this does not help her consolidate her power.

Aegon And Aemond Finally Meet

Aegon arrives at Harrenhal with Sunfyre, ready to take revenge on his brother, Aemond. However, Aemond suddenly submits, admitting his guilt and begging for forgiveness.

The brothers then form an alliance: in exchange for forgiveness, Aegon demands that Aemond help him eliminate the threat to his power posed by Daeron Targaryen and Rhaenyra and reclaim the Iron Throne.

What Happened During the Battle of Tumbleton?

At the Battle of Tumbleton, neither side's plan goes as expected. Furious, Ormund Hightower searches for Ulf the White, unaware that Gwayne and Daeron freed Corlys Velaryon in an attempt to negotiate peace. However, their plan is thwarted.

Daemon counted on Ulf and Hugh's dragons, but Ulf had betrayed the Blacks in Episode 7 and Hugh searched for his wife and didn't participate in the battle. Ormund finds Ulf, who has drunk himself into oblivion and slept through the battle. Ormund brutally beats Ulf, prompting Ulf to betray the Greens, too.

Daemon, losing patience, burns the city gates and begins an assault. In the midst of the battle, Roderick Dustin kills Ormund but is killed by Ulf's dragonfire as well. Enraged, Ulf indiscriminately rains fire on both armies and the city itself.

The stone buildings collapse, nearly burying Daemon. Corlis finds a stunned Daemon and informs him that Ulf has defected, forcing Daemon to retreat and saving his life.

What Happened to Helaena?

Broken by visions and mockery, Helaena throws herself out of the tower window. Upon learning of this, Rhaenyra shows no mercy.

She examines Helaena's embroidery and sees a prophecy: Helaena's fall and Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne amidst a cage of red threads and fire.
