House of the Dragon season 4 release date confirmed for 2028: the cast still hasn't seen a single script

HBO has officially penciled in the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon for 2028, and yes, that math is exactly as upsetting as it looks. Season 3 wrapped in August, the wound of Tumbleton is still fresh, and the network's response is essentially: see you in two years, drink water.

Meanwhile, the people who will actually be in this season — Emma D'Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Tom Glynn-Carney, the whole doomed Targaryen family reunion — have not read a single page. Not a scene. Not a stage direction. Nothing.

The 2028 of it all

To be fair (ugh, fine), the show has kept a suspiciously punctual biennial rhythm: 2022, June 2024, June 2026. A summer 2028 premiere tracks perfectly with that pattern, which HBO locked in when it renewed the show back in November 2025. Eight episodes, final season, cameras rolling in early 2027. The Dance of the Dragons ends here, because there is no season 5 — showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed ages ago that four is the number, and the number is four.

So what's the holdup? Dragons, mostly. Condal has promised the biggest production the series has ever mounted, and CGI fire-lizards the size of cathedrals do not render themselves.

About those scripts

Here's my favorite part. The scripts exist. Condal is deep in them. He told a press conference, via Gold Derby:

"We actually are starting to turn drafts over to HBO."

HBO gets drafts. The cast gets vibes. Matthew Needham, who plays everyone's favorite foot-adjacent schemer Larys Strong, has confirmed the actors have zero official pages in hand, and HBO is guarding the ending like it's the Iron Throne itself — no trailer, no plot details, and any "leak" floating around right now is fan fiction with confidence.

If this feels familiar, congratulations on your long memory. Back at New York Comic Con in 2024, fans asked the cast about season 3 scripts and Tom Glynn-Carney answered, in words I think about weekly:

"Not a jot, not a letter."

And then season 3 arrived anyway, on schedule, with a naval battle the size of a small war crime. So the actors-in-the-dark thing isn't a red flag — it's just how this franchise operates:

• Writers write for roughly a year before anyone else sees anything.
• The cast finds out who dies approximately five minutes before you do.
• HBO treats plot summaries like nuclear codes.
• Everyone survives the wait, allegedly.

Until 2027 filming starts, we cope with what we have: a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season to bridge the gap, and the comforting knowledge that somewhere in Los Angeles, Ryan Condal is clutching a stack of pages that would ruin all our lives if we read them. Can't wait.
