The Targaryens’ war is finally coming in House of the Dragon’s season 3, but a new character might even be a much bigger deal than all those bloody battles — here’s what Ryan Condal said about the show’s next instalment recently.

Things are about to get bigger in House of the Dragon’s upcoming third season, and it’s not about the imminent war that’s about to unfold between the Greens and the Blacks.

With the second season cut from 10 episodes to 8 just several months before the premiere, the show definitely left all its action-packed sequences for the future. However, there will also be some time and space for the exploration of the characters only.

This, according to House of the Dragon’s showrunner Ryan Condal, will be the main idea for a very unusual episode that is nothing like the show’s audiences have seen ever before.

Ryan Condal Teases “Character-Driven” Experimental Episode in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3

It’s been a while since Condal confirmed that the next season would become the one to witness most of “Fire & Blood”’s most epic battles, though it seems like the upcoming instalment will be something really special in many ways.

“We got to have a little fun this season, and there’s a conceptual episode that I’m really excited about that [Sara Hess] wrote, and that’s all I’m gonna say about it. It isn’t in the traditional vernacular of what we have laid out. It’s very character-driven, I think it’s really great and I’m really excited to see it rendered”, Condal revealed during a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast recently.

Apart from that, previously the showrunner also confirmed that King Viserys I’s and Queen Alicent Hightower’s long-lost son Daeron will become an integral part of the story in season 3.

“Daeron's in the story. He's a big feature in the book, but if you read the book narrative sequentially, the material we've covered so far didn't really have a lot of call for Daeron in it, which is why we're getting to this now”, Condal stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in March.

‘House of the Dragon’ Fan Theories on Season 3’s Experimental Episode Come In

While some had fun suggestions about House of the Dragon’s new special feature, predicting that it would be a beach or musical episode, others offered some more grounded ideas for the teased special episode.

“They said it does something never-before seen an ASOIAF series. I admit I don’t watch much TV, so are there any upcoming events that they could do something cool with? They’ve done plenty of long shots and single-location/event episodes so I doubt it’s something like that. I would say something like more dreams or showing a dragon fight from the ground, but those aren’t things you base an entire episode around”, Redditor marx42 wrote in a thread.

“They might as well make the whole rest of the Dance "unique" at this point; with the decisions they've made, I have no clue how they're going to adapt certain events from the book without them being completely nonsensical”, DOPPGANG_ suggested.

“I have to think its something that’ll hinder the viewer in some way. Maybe completely in High Valyrian or told from an outsiders perspective like the book”, AWall925 commented.

When Will ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Be Released?

The show’s third season is expected to arrive on HBO Max sometime in the summer of 2026.
