HBO’s upcoming expansion of George Martin’s medieval-ish universe will have a lot to do with both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon — here’s how.

While House of the Dragon ’s next season is still far away from showing the long-awaited war between the Targaryens, another spinoff is already on its way to fill in a major plot hole.

Having already received several portions of praise from George Martin himself, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to land on streaming this year, now based on Martin’s short stories and following Ser Duncan and Egg’s adventures.

The story itself connects directly to Westeros and its ample history, though it might be challenging to see how it actually relates to the original show without familiar characters coming in — we’re here to help you connect the dots.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Timeline, Explained

In case you’ve missed it, HBO was the first to break down on the spinoff’s relation to Game of Thrones in the clearest way possible when the studio announced the series back in 2023.

“A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends”, HBO’s official synopsis reads.

This, apparently, immediately puts A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ahead of Game of Thrones. The spinoff’s events unfold sometime in 200 AC while Game of Thrones takes off in 298 AC, almost 300 years after Aegon I Targaryen’s Conquest of Westeros.

Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Related to House of the Dragon?

Well, more than anything else.

Since House of the Dragon is nothing but a pure dedication to the Targaryens’ history of wars, family feuds and attempts to seize the power, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be the show’s direct sequel, recounting the life of Egg aka Aegon V Targaryen, Rhaenyra’s great great grandson.

As for the timeline, the math is simple: there’s around 200 years between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is only 100 years away from Game of Thrones.

This leads us to believe that the upcoming spinoff’s events will unfold around 100 years after what House of the Dragon is yet to show.

When Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Coming to Streaming?

HBO hasn’t announced the premiere date yet, but the series is scheduled for a release sometime this year. Earlier George Martin spilled the tea about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ possible premiere this fall.
