How did Zeke die in The Chi?
Off-screen, between seasons, and with a eulogy delivered by the man who used to blackmail him. Peak South Side.
The Chi's final season doesn't ease you in. It opens at the Church of the Living Water, and the man in the casket is Pastor Zeke.
No death scene. No last sermon. Ezekiel "Zeke" Bailey (Daniel J. Watts) died somewhere in the gap between season 7 and season 8, and the show tells you about it the way his congregation finds out: at the funeral, with Charles at the pulpit. Yes, that Charles, the former assistant pastor who blackmailed his way back onto the payroll, now standing over the coffin asking everyone to please not gossip.
So who did it
Nuck. The 63rd Street Mob boss Zeke had been "counseling" in exchange for donations and protection. The premiere assembles it in pieces rather than a flashback:
- Zeke's ex-wife Carolyn tells Papa the police had come for Zeke's cooperation: "they wanted info on one of the guys he was counseling."
- Nuck, who had been running money through the church, couldn't risk his spiritual advisor flipping to the feds.
- Papa later tells a friend he's certain it was Nuck and that he heard it from someone reliable.
- Whether Nuck pulled the trigger himself or farmed it out, the show never says. It doesn't need to.
A pastor who laundered a drug lord's money, found God for real, and then died because he might have found the FBI too. That's not irony. That's the South Side.
The slow-motion fall
Zeke arrived in season 6 as Douda's replacement money-pastor, a megachurch showman whose catchphrase was essentially "tithe harder." Douda burned him with a cigar for asking for more. Charles showed up with blackmail. Then season 7 took everything else: his wife's affair with Jake got exposed, his congregation side-eyed his relationship with his white secretary, and a humiliated Zeke stepped back from the pulpit and into Nuck's orbit.
The cruel part is that he was getting better. He reconnected with Carolyn, with his daughter Kenya, with his grandson. On this show, that's the sound of a countdown.
Why Papa is the one who breaks
Papa already lost his own father, Pastor Jackson, to Douda in season 6. Losing Zeke, the second preacher who took him in, is the blow that finally cracks him. Shamon Brown Jr. has said the arc was overdue for a character who spent years as the golden preacher boy: this season, "we finally get to see him break down," he told HuffPost.
The series wrapped in July, eight seasons in. Zeke's funeral was the first scene of the last chapter, and it set the terms: nobody gets a clean ending here, least of all the men who preach about them.
