How does Mushoku Tensei end? The author posted the ending online for free back in 2015
Most anime fans live in a state of permanent cliffhanger. The manga's ongoing, the light novel's on hiatus, the author has a wrist injury. Mushoku Tensei is the rare one where the whole story has been done for years, and the first version of it cost nothing.
The version that's been free since 2015

Rifujin na Magonote started posting Mushoku Tensei on Shōsetsuka ni Narō, the Japanese web-novel site, in November 2012. He finished it there in April 2015. Twenty-four volumes' worth of web chapters, beginning to end, readable by anyone with a browser and either Japanese or a fan translation.
The light novels came after, expanding the web version into 26 volumes that ran from 2014 to 2022. That's the "official" text now, and it's the one Seven Seas publishes in English. But the ending is the same ending. It's been public for over a decade.
A completed story with no hiatus, no sequel bait and no author disappearing into a hospital. In this genre, that's the real fantasy.
What the ending actually is
Rudeus lives.
That's the headline, and after a series that opened with a truck and a dead 34-year-old, it's not nothing. The main conflict resolves in Volume 24; Volumes 25 and 26 are epilogue. The final volume jumps forward and shows the rest of his life:
- Three wives: Sylphiette, Roxy and Eris
- Six children, two with each of them: Lucy, Lara, Ars, Sieghart, Lily and Christina
- A house full of people, a legacy, and no more world-ending fights to win
- Death at 74, in his own bed, of old age, surrounded by family
No heroic sacrifice, no final battle, no cut to black. A man who wasted his first life gets a complete second one and dies the way most people hope to. The series has always argued that this was the point, and the ending refuses to be more dramatic than that argument.
The author is very clear that he's not taking notes
If you're wondering whether fan pressure ever shaped the finale, Rifujin has answered that. Asked by Anime News Network whether he'd ever softened Rudeus's ugliest early moments, he said the balance was right, because "his mountain of regrets makes the act of redoing life more meaningful." And in a 2025 post on X, he was even more direct:
"I'm happy when I receive praise, sad when I'm criticized, and hurt when I'm subjected to slander or abusive language. But no matter what people say, I'll still write what I want to write, so nothing changes."
So the quiet ending is his. It was always going to be his.
How far away the anime is
Far. Season 3, which started July 5, picks up around Volume 13. The Orsted confrontation and Eris's return sit in Volumes 15 and 16. Everything after that, the Hitogami endgame and the epilogue, is Volumes 17 through 26. At the rate Studio Bind is going, that's several more seasons, assuming they get greenlit.
Meanwhile the author's follow-up, Redundant Reincarnation, a set of side stories tucked inside the main timeline, wraps with its fourth volume on November 25, 2026, per Game Rant. After that, the Six-Faced World is officially closed for business, unless he changes his mind.
If you want to skip ahead
The light novel is finished and in English. Volume 26 is the last. Nobody will stop you. The anime, at its current pace, will catch up sometime around when today's college freshmen have mortgages.
