How is Elise alive in Insidious: Out of the Further? Lin Shaye has now been on six posters for a character who died in film one
Elise Rainier died in 2010. She has been the face of this franchise ever since. If that math offends you, you have not been paying attention to how the Insidious movies work — or to how much this series refuses to function without Lin Shaye.
A quick death-and-resurrection ledger

To be clear: Elise is not "alive" in Out of the Further, and the movie doesn't pretend otherwise. Here's how a character killed in the first film keeps headlining:
- Insidious (2010): Elise is murdered by the possessed Josh. Dead. Definitively.
- Chapters 3 & The Last Key: prequels — younger, breathing Elise
- Chapter 2 & The Red Door: ghost Elise, moonlighting as everyone's spirit guide
- Out of the Further (2026): ghost Elise again, assisting new heroine Gemma from beyond the grave, reached through a medium named Clare with her own connection to her
The franchise killed its best character in movie one and has been doing increasingly elaborate necromancy ever since. Producer James Wan has essentially admitted the regret, and offered the official explanation for the loophole:
Translation: death is a suggestion when your afterlife is a foggy dimension with lore.

Also, she saved the movie itself
The delicious footnote: when Sony canceled Out of the Further mid-development, it was reportedly Shaye herself who pushed back until the film was revived. Elise saves people from the Further; Lin saves Insidious from executives. The woman contains multitudes, several of them posthumous.
