How many Fast and the Furious movies exist? Even die-hard fans stumble on the count

The count is genuinely slippery, and it's not because anyone forgot to pay attention. It's because this franchise has been quietly multiplying like a family that keeps adopting new cousins at every barbecue.

The math, such as it is

Here's the actual arithmetic, and I want you to notice how every number is technically correct:

• 10 mainline movies have hit theaters, from The Fast and the Furious (2001) through Fast X (2023).
• 11 if you count Hobbs & Shaw (2019), the spin-off where Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham insult each other for two hours. You should count it.
• 13 if you add the two official short films, The Turbo Charged Prelude (2003) and Los Bandoleros (2009), which exist purely to explain plot holes between sequels. Iconic behavior.
• 14 if you're the person in the back yelling about Better Luck Tomorrow (2002), Justin Lin's indie that introduced Han before Han was Han. Universal has never officially claimed it. Justin Lin has never let it go.

The correct answer to "how many Fast movies are there" is "it depends how much you love Han," and that's beautiful.

There's also a six-season animated series, a Netflix's worth of video games, and a spinning roller coaster opening at Universal Studios Hollywood, because at some point this stopped being a film series and became a lifestyle with a $7 billion box office attached.

And then there's the one that doesn't exist yet

The final mainline movie — number eleven, or the twelfth film overall, if you're keeping score at home — is Fast Forever, currently parked at March 17, 2028. It's been delayed so many times it briefly felt theoretical, but Vin Diesel told Variety at the original film's 25th anniversary screening, "We start shooting in December," after four years and four sets of writers. He also says the script made him cry, which, given that this man once drove a car between three skyscrapers, I choose to believe.

Director Louis Leterrier, meanwhile, told Polygon, "There will be an ending, and it's great" — while also admitting he hadn't read the script yet. The confidence. The audacity. The franchise, truly.

Twenty-five years, one trip to actual space, and the finale still starts with a man promising a studio he'll behave. Never change.

So: ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, or fourteen. Pick your number, defend it at brunch, and know that in March 2028 every single one of them goes up by one. Family.
