While the first season followed through The Last of Us’ first game, the second one is believed to be adapting only a part of the second game’s events. If you have never played the original games, this may get confusing.
How Many Games Does The Last of Us Franchise Have?
Officially, there are only two existing parts of the video game joined by a content expansion.
HBO’s The Last of Us season 1 remains faithful to the first game of the same name, released for PlayStation in 2013.
It also adapts the storyline depicted in The Last of Us: Left Behind, an expansion pack following Ellie and her best friend Riley’s adventures in an abandoned mall, as well as Ellie’s attempts to search for some medicine for Joel in another abandoned mall in Colorado.
The show’s second season kicks off with the events of The Last of Us: Part II, a sequel to the original game released in 2020; however, The Last of Us’ creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann previously stated that the new instalment would go through only one half of the second game.
What The Last of Us Season 3 Will Be Based on
Since it has been confirmed that the ongoing second season will not reach the final events of the sequel game, it makes sense for the show’s third instalment to pick up the story right where the second season will leave it.

However, it also means that, even though it’s not made official yet, the next season will become the final one for HBO’s apocalyptic drama.
Without too many spoilers ahead, the second game ends on a pretty definite note, leaving Ellie with no other reason to go on another adventure.
When Is The Last of Us Next Episode Coming?
The current season’s episode 3 will air on Max on April 20. The remaining episodes will arrive one by one on the platform every Sunday until May 25.
