How many wives does Rudeus have in Mushoku Tensei? Season 3 changes the number

Rudeus Greyrat, formerly a 34-year-old shut-in, currently a teenage magician with a household that keeps expanding in ways that would make a Utah reality show blush. If you've been watching the anime, the answer to "how many wives" depends entirely on which episode you paused on.

Season 3 has been airing since July 5, and the number is moving again.

Where Season 2 left it: two

By the end of Season 2, Rudeus has married Sylphiette, his childhood friend who found him at magic school, and they have a daughter, Lucy. Then in the finale, after the labyrinth disaster that kills his father Paul, Rudeus announces that Roxy, his first teacher and the reason he can leave the house at all, will become his second wife. Sylphie agrees.

So Season 2 closes on two wives, one kid, and a household that also includes his amnesiac mother, his stepmother, and two younger sisters. Cozy.

Where Season 3 picks it up: still two, but official

Season 3 opens with a two-episode detour to the Holy Land of Swords for Eris's training arc, which is the show's way of saying "remember her? You should." Then Episode 3, "Life Back at Home," makes the Roxy marriage a done deal on screen. She moves in, starts teaching at Ranoa Magic Academy, and Rudeus introduces her around as his wife.

His friend Cliff can't accept it on religious grounds. The show plays this straight, which is one of the funnier things about Mushoku Tensei: a series that treats polygamy as a cultural-values debate between a Millis believer and a guy who used to argue about this on Japanese message boards.

Two wives and a promise. Rudeus says two is where it ends. Anyone who's watched this man make a promise about anything knows how that goes.

Where it's headed: three

Eris Boreas Greyrat. The girl who left him after their first night together in Season 1 and vanished for years. Season 3's promotional material has been pushing her return so hard it's practically a spoiler with a marketing budget.

In the source material, Eris comes back during the confrontation with the Dragon God Orsted, and Rudeus ends up with three wives: Sylphie, Roxy and Eris. Given that Season 3 is a 27-episode season split into two cours, the Orsted material is where this run is aiming. If you want to know the final count, it's three. If you want to know where the anime is as of this week, it's two and a very obvious foreshadow.

Why this isn't the harem show it looks like

The author, Rifujin na Magonote, has been asked more than once why he wrote a protagonist this messy. His answer to Anime News Network was:

"Because he's a controversial character, his mountain of regrets makes the act of redoing life more meaningful."

Which is the thing to hold onto about the wives. Each of them saved him at a point where he couldn't save himself. Roxy dragged him out of the house. Sylphie fixed him when he was broken. Eris kept him alive across a continent. The show isn't collecting them so much as paying debts.

Quick reference, for the group chat

  • After Season 2: 2 (Sylphie, Roxy)
  • Season 3 so far: 2, with Roxy's marriage now on screen
  • Where the story ends: 3 (add Eris)
  • Kids by the end: 6, two per wife

Studio Bind is streaming it weekly on Crunchyroll, and the second cour is expected after a break. Set your expectations for the number to change one more time.
