How Old Is Dora the Explorer? Movies & Series Timeline, Explained

You might have been used to seeing Dora as a kid in the original TV series, but a more recent movie adaptation has given a major update about the character’s age.
There must be quite many movies and TV series’ characters that forever marked your childhood, and it might be fair to say Dora the Explorer is one of top options that pop up in mind during some nostalgic moments.
Launched back in 2000, Dora the Explorer has become one of many kids’ first adventurous quest as they followed the Latina girl and her monkey friend Boots through some dangers that forests and jungles might hide.
With time, however, Dora’s story evolved radically, and the 2019 movie adaptation starring The Last of Us’ actress Isabela Merced confirms that she’s no longer the kid we all used to know back then.
How Old Is Dora the Explorer Throughout the Franchise’s Instalments?
In the original series released in 2000, Dora is introduced as a 7-year-old girl.
The 2013 sequel TV show titled Dora and Friends: Into the City! finds the character at the time when she’s 10 years old.
The movie adaptation Dora and the Lost City of Gold, which premiered back in 2019, makes an even bigger jump, revealing that Dora is no longer a child but a 16-year-old teenager.
In the movie, Dora embarks on a mission to save her parents by solving a seemingly impossible mystery behind a lost Incan civilization, all the while trying to prepare herself for the most challenging quest she’s ever had, which is high school.
Will There Be More ‘Dora the Explorer’ TV Series and Movies?
Yes, and there’s just several weeks left before another instalment for the Dora the Explorer franchise hits streaming.
Following Dora and the Lost City of Gold, another live-action movie titled Dora And The Search For Sol Dorado will be premiering on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon on July 2, also coming to international platforms sometime after, as Deadline reported back in May.
Planned as a part of the franchise’s 25-year anniversary celebration, the movie will still follow the 16-year-old version of Dora. This time, she is portrayed by Samantha Lorraine, who, alongside her friends, “trek[s] through the perilous dangers of the Amazonian jungle in search of the ancient treasure of Sol Dorado to prevent it from falling into enemy hands”.
