How old is Jae in Avatar: Seven Havens? His Brigade rank gives the number away
Jae is old enough to give orders to other Brigade kids and young enough that they don't always listen.
Avatar: Seven Havens premiered on Paramount+ on October 9. It's set 225 years after The Legend of Korra, in Ellora, one of seven fortified cities built after a disaster the survivors call the Cataclysm. Jae, voiced by Major Curda, is an airbender in Ellora's Bending Brigade who has grown up being taught to fear the Avatar, until he meets one. Pavi, the nine-year-old Earthbender who turns out to be the Avatar, saves his life, and he becomes her mentor and traveling companion.
What the show says, and doesn't
The series never states Jae's age, in dialogue or in its official character descriptions. A fan-run character guide lists him as 19, but it cites no episode for the number. What the show does give is his rank, and the rules of the organization he holds it in.
"As squad leader, you gotta listen to me," Jae tells his team in the first episode.
His squad takes the title about as seriously as teenagers take any title. "Jae played the squad leader card!" one of them shouts back.
How the Brigade works
Ellora doesn't have a volunteer army. It has a draft, and it starts early:
- Who serves — everyone who can bend. "The law states every bender must join the Brigade," Commander Bountan says in the premiere.
- When — benders are drafted once they reach middle school age, which in American terms means 11 or 12.
- Why so young — benders are being born less often every year. Captain Karthik tells a mother whose son is being taken that "the Brigade's ranks" are "shrinking each year."
- Who's at the bottom — cadets, the newest recruits.
- Who's above Jae — Karthik, the captain, who becomes commander when Bountan is injured in a storm.
That puts Jae on the first rung of command: above the cadets, below the officers who run the Brigade. His own squad, which includes Daemin, voiced by Darren Barnet, is described by critics as a group of young Brigade members.
The math
A squad leader in a force that drafts children at 11 or 12 can't be 12 himself. He needs enough years in uniform to be trusted with other recruits, which points to at least four or five years of service. That makes Jae roughly 16 to 18.

Everything else the show establishes fits that range:
- He outranks his squad — and they still treat him like one of them.
- He's in a relationship — Jae is with Datu, which reads as a teenager, not a child.
- He's naive — TV Guide's review called him "a well-meaning but naive airbender," and he starts the series believing what Ellora taught him about the Avatar.
- He's not an officer — the adults who give him orders, Karthik and Bountan, hold real military titles. Jae's is the one a teenager gets.
Ellora puts its benders in uniform at 11 or 12. Jae is the one already giving orders.
How he compares with the twins
Pavi and her twin, Nisha, are nine, which makes Jae roughly twice their age. Nisha has been training in secret with Karthik for three years. "Captain Karthik found me three years ago and trains me in secret," she tells Pavi. That means Karthik started teaching her at six, about five or six years before the Brigade would have drafted her.

Pavi has spent her life trying not to be noticed by the Brigade at all. "The last thing we want is to be noticed by anyone in the Brigade," she says in episode 2. The Brigade member she ends up traveling with is a squad leader.
