How old is Tanya in Youjo Senki?
Nine when she enlists. Around forty on the inside. Somewhere in between when she's screaming at God.
Youjo Senki, sold in English as The Saga of Tanya the Evil, is back after seven years, and the return has revived the single most-asked question about it: how old is this child, exactly, and how old is the man inside her.
Season two premiered July 8 and is airing Wednesdays on Crunchyroll, so this is a live issue. Let's do the math.
The two ages
Tanya Degurechaff has two birthdays and the show never lets you forget either.
The salaryman. In his first life he was a Japanese HR manager in his late thirties, a man whose job was firing people and who was very good at it right up until one of them pushed him in front of a train. He met a being claiming to be God, called it "Being X" to its face, and was reincarnated as punishment. Personality intact. Cynicism intact. Body: not so much.
Tanya. Born in the Empire (fantasy Germany), she enters the Imperial military academy and is on the northern front by nine, in 1923 of the show's calendar. Season one carries her to roughly eleven through the Rhine campaign. The 2019 movie is set in 1926, so twelve-ish. Season two adapts roughly volumes four through seven of Carlo Zen's novels, which puts her at about twelve to thirteen while commanding a battalion.
She is a preteen with a major's insignia and a forty-year-old's grudge against management.
Why the show keeps her young
Because the joke and the horror are the same thing. Tanya's entire strategy is to climb the ranks fast enough to land a safe rear-echelon desk before the war eats her. Being X keeps arranging for the opposite. The younger she looks, the more absurd it is that she's the most feared aviation mage in the Empire, and the more grotesque it is that she's there at all.
It's also why people mislabel her. Author Carlo Zen has said he doesn't understand the English-speaking shorthand that gets thrown at his protagonist, telling Anime News Network: "She's certainly not a hero, but she's not that kind of evil." His word for her was pragmatist.
Season two housekeeping
- Studio: NUT is back, with a new director in Takayuki Yamamoto.
- Voice: Aoi Yuki returns as Tanya and sings the ending theme again, as is tradition.
- Length: twelve episodes, premiered July 8, 2026.
- Wait time: season one aired in 2017, the film in 2019, the season two announcement in 2021. Fans have aged more than Tanya has.
The real answer
If someone asks you how old Tanya is, the correct response is "which one." The body is a girl in her early teens by season two. The mind is a man who died in a Tokyo train station somewhere around forty, and who has spent every year since trying to file the correct paperwork to get out of a war.
Nobody in this show is the age they look. That's the point, and it's also why it's so uncomfortable to watch with your parents.
Season two picks up with her still not getting that desk job. Some things don't change, regardless of how many bodies you've been given.
